Garmin Etrex Vista C and POI

Being a new member, I am searching for what I suppose are answers to old questions. I use my Vista C with my laptop. nRoute sees the GPS with no trouble. However Garmin's POI utility will not see the Vista C when attached with the same USB cable. Is this possible?

Only the 'x' versions of the the eTrex line with expandable memory can accept Custom POIs.
