Chatty Kathy Thread for the week of November 5th 2007

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

Appreciation

DW (camp trailer jargon for wife) and I recently bought a 5ver (camp trailer jargon for 5th wheel) camp trailer. 5ver's are notoriously tall in height. My trailer stands 12' 6" and because of that I was apprehensive about driving under bridges.

I change my Nuvi 350 to the truck setting, but still I see news and hear news of trucks crashing into low bridges and such. Believe me, when you put the kind of money in to a trailer like 5ver's go for, crashing into a low bridge is a nightmare.

So I went to POI Factory and WALLA WALLA BING BANG!
One of the POI files I downloaded was the low clearances. Believe me it give me a bit of confidence to know I can be alerted to an oncoming low bridge! I set the proximity for 10,000 feet. Cool.

I wonder if there is a way to get the clearances for all bridges in the USA... ?

Thanks for the file.

Skool zones

anyone make POIs for school zones in their local area,?
trying to figure an easy way to flag them,
started doing a list that are just on my way to work and home. kinda time consuming.

We have a 5th wheel as well and we were worried about low clearance bridges when we started on our one year trip last year. I didn't have a GPS/POI file when we started out. So we bought the Rand McNally Motor Carrier Road Atlas. It has all the clearances for each state and much more. We used this and were quite happy with it. In addition I like to carry a map with me anyway even if I have the GPS. I like it because it gives me a nice overview. So the Road Atlas came in handy for that as well.

Thanks for the tip. I'll purchase the Rand McNally Motor Carrier Road Atlas tomorrow.

I still like the concept of Jill warning me where the low clearances are though. Believe me, I have learned that I cannot get too much help.

acronyms

OK you all - What do you think are the top 10 acronyms used when text messaging??? I.E. IMHO (in my humble opinion), LOL (laugh out loud), etc. These are getting more use in emails, blogs and this forum. Since I don't do much texting, I always have to google these acronyms to see what people are talking about in blogs, forums and emails.

Acronyms

My inability to use the creative acronym or dumb down the spelling is part of the reason I don't send text messages. I prefer a keyboard with full-sized keys.

It's "for you" and NOT "4U"! It's "to be" and NOT "2B"!!

Okay, so I ranted a little....

Ah, yes...HoJo's

I liked their Russian dressing...mmmmmmm! And the 3 waitresses in the Lynbrook, LI HoJo's were a hoot - Gina, Kathy and Robin L. (I had a crush on Robin and found out that I went to grade school with Gina). They would come to our table to hang out while the other patrons waited for service. And desert? Forget about it...the bowls would overflow with ice-cream. I hope they're happy and doing well!

Robin if you read this send me an email! wink

hope so

Here's my theory,

He got busted for speeding (forgot to turn on his RD)as he was running a red light camera intersection (forgot to turn on his GPSr)
Not to fear though, after a little time in the slammer and pleading his case to John Q Lawman, they let him go just so they could get some peace and quite. Then on the way to a new restaurant, he got lost (GPSr still off). While trying to find his way, he found this really neat electronics store with all the high tech automotive anti radar, laser, speed trap preventer gadget things that one could ever dream of. Speaking of dreaming, that's what he's doing because he's on a business trip, using a borrowed laptop but forgot that poi-factory.com has a hyphen in the URL. He couldn't find us because he forgot to use a search engine. Speaking of engine, he saw this really cool car drive by and started to follow it, he got lost again (yeah, it's still off). The driver was this drop dead gorgeous......then he really woke up on his business trip and realized he forgot to bring along the borrowed laptop.
When he gets back in town, batten down the hatches, because it's gonna get a bit windy in here...

I really do hope all is fine with AF.

The standard height for a

The standard height for a semi is 13,6" Anything over that is considerd "Oversize". you will be
fine on any interstate at 12,6' a good idea might be
to get a bicycle flag. Take the flag off and have
a temperary way to attach the pole to the front bumper of
your truck and cut it off about 4 inches higher than
your trailer. also if you see a bridge that says is
a couple of inches higher than your trailer use extreme coution. you never know they could have repaived the road making the bridge lower than the sign says. many a truck has hit because of repaving
and the sign not changed. hope this helps.

Another Great Weekend

November, and daytime temps sometimes get into the 50's.
Great w/e for motorcycle rides through the backroads of MA, NH and VT with Garmin in the saddlebag.
Turned back clocks - outdated tradition.
Patriots still undefeated - great game, horrible refs.
Last night got a bit of snow (not good).
Missed out on the Costco deal. Oh well, my fault for waiting till today.

Asianfire?

Naww... you guys don't understand the real asianfire...

Here's how it really is...

See... he's the guy that puts up all them redlight cameras in the first place. And him being gone...well since he gets a royalty for all the cameras bring in... he is out putting in more cameras.

And him being on the modest and humble side... he'll probably never tell us where he put them in... just sat back and smile as we pay him.

And if you believe all this... then call me quick and I'll sell you my water well in the antarctic.

lol

Found it.

ASIANFIRE IS BACK NOW

Awwww, it almost sounded that you all missed me!

Yes, I was in Boston for three days. Man, Boston roads are a nightmare!!! Even with a GPSr, by the time it recalculated, I passed the turn and then there are more one way streets then I ever seen. Went to that ___ Oyster House (can't remember the name) and I think by the time I got onto 90, I had seen all of Boston...lol. My client kept me busy (unlike when I am in the office) so I didn't have time to visit this site much.

Coming back from Springfield to Boston I got hit with RADAR 3 times (I was soooooo excited). My RD did an excellent job this trip. But the best part was getting hit with laser for the 1st time in my life (and he didn't pull me!).

I did have fun with the 2007 Mustang GT that I rented. It can go from 0 to 100 pretty fast (and brakes pretty fast too, cause I don't need a ticket).

My Nuvi did fine on the flights, got 522 as highest speed.

I ran a toll booth too when in boston. I didn't see a "Cash" lane and so I picked "tickets" and noone was there. So I just went through. I didnt get it until this morning that is where I was suppose to pick up a ticket. I guess that is why I couldn't find it when I got off 90 and the lady asked for it.

The oyster bar I think is the name.

DW and I loved Boston. At 6:30 AM we drove to the middle of Boston, got a parking spot and then unintentionally, promptly got lost and it took us until 1:00 AM the next day to find our car.

We love Charter House, Sea Fare and the museums. Loved the freedom walk. Went to Cheers of course...

And the way the people talk... See, being from NM and going to Boston is like going to another planet for us. We absolutely loved it.

But... I would bet that if people in Boston area had to take a real driver's test... 80% of them would flunk and the other 20% don't drive - lol. The way they drive must be to floorboard the gas, close your eyes and hang on... and since everyone will see you coming so fast... they will naturally get out of the way.

But we lived. :_ We plan to go back in a couple of years.

the thing with Low

the thing with Low Overpasses is no survey company will want to offer this info in a GPS based system due to liability issues.

what happens if Navteq or Teleatlas sells this product then someone crashes????

Thanks Miss POI.
I have a lot of reading to do!
I am trying to figure out how to have the POI come up on my 250W as I am driving. Is there a TUT for this?
We went to Calgary on the weekend and nothing came up as POI's on the screen or by voice announcement.
Is there something I need to set up in the unit itself to make this work?
This will be the only time I will ask these questions in this thread. I will endeavor to post in the proper thread in the future.
