I am getting ready to upload poi files to my Garmin 340.
I've never done this before.
What I'd like to know is what happens to the data thats already in the unit? For instance, if I upload a Radio Shack db, there will be both new and old entries. What happens to the locations already there? Does this new file totally overwrite the existing one or does it just add new locations?
If you are uploading Custom POIs
If you are uploading Custom POIs to your GPSr using
POI Loader then all previously stored Custom POIs will
be erased on your GPSr.
You should have a folder on your PC or Mac with all
previously stored Custom POIs and let the POI Loader upload
old & new POI files !
It will not effect factory installed POIs at all - the ones that
come with the mapping software !

ok, thanks. All I have are factory installed. Take the example of Radio Shack. Will it only add new locations or will I see two entries at a location that was in the factory db?

The Custom POIs will not affect the built in POIs. They are stored in different locations on the unit.
So on the map, you could theoretically have both at the same location, although for most units, you have to be zoomed in much closer to see the built in POIs than the Custom POIs.
