Handhelds?

Anyone out there use any of the handheld Garmins like the eTrex or any of their other models? I'm thinking of getting one for fishing, hiking, etc. and don't thing my C330 would be much help off the beaten path.

Thanks,

Walking/ Hiking

I have the old old GPS72 which I think was the forerunner to the eTrex units and have used it successfully while dune bashing in the desert as well as long walks in strange cities.

Basically to get home just follow the breadcrumb trail back.

My brother who hikes extensively has the eTrex and uses it all the time.

Hope this helps...

I have an older vista

I still use my older vista. I use it for 4-wheeling, fishing and hunting. I will never give this baby up!

GPSmap 60

I have an older Garmin GPSmap 60CS. It's a great unit that I've used for snowmobiling, hiking, and even cross country navigating in my car (all the City Navigator and Topo maps work with it). The newest top models of the 60 line have a memory card slot that allows you to hold much more mapping software than mine allows. My only problem has been a loose USB connection that I need to get repaired. I'm not familiar with the eTrex line, but some are very basic models that are pretty much electronic compasses. I'm not knocking that, I just suggest you make certain of the unit's functionality before you purchase it.

Good luck!

e-trex

I use an e-trex for geocaching. No maps, but for $90, it is better then toting my Nuvi through mud, water, etc. It works great for this application and always gets me back to my parked car.

eTrex vista HCx

I just got the vista HCx 3 weeks ago, fantastic unit for geocaching, does way more than I need. The base map is just that, major highways and cities not good for driving. Small hand held- SMALL screen, excellent resolution, compass is great.
I live in Ontario so I got the Trak southern Ontario topo map 1:10000 scale ($179), it fits on a 1 gig card with 500 meg free.
you can load the City Navigator map if you are willing to pay for it again, also marine charts....

One set up I still can't figure out yet, any destination I choose (driving or off road) it always plots "as the crow flies" ??

Hope this helps.

Garmin 76Csx

I bought the 76Csx and immmediately replaced the card with 2G memory. I just came back from a sailing trip in the Virgin Islands. It did everything I wanted and more. The boat I was on also had a nav system and it tracked amazingly close. It even tracks the barametric pressure to alert you of weather changes. The compass features are also very useful. With the 2G memory, I was able to track the route for the total trip.

Magellan

I started many years ago with a Lowrance GM100 and moved to a Magellan Meridium Gold, which I still use when hiking and traveling to places while not in a car.

The feature set one needs to hike is a lot less demanding than when in an automobile.

eTrex Vista

I have an older eTrex Vista that I use for hiking and did use in my car until I bought my 660. It does not have good reception in dense forests and the battery life is not that good. In the car, you could not really plan routes. But, it was very handy to have to check my position and save waypoints. I would love to purchase the new HCx version some day.....

ETrex Ledgend

I have an ETrex Ledgend and love it. I use it for Geocaching and other outdoor activities. I downloaded the street maps and that works well also. Handy little unit.

I also have a Magellan

I also have a Magellan meridian Gold. Great for hiking, Geocaching and saving and finding fishing spots on the boat. The topo maps have good detail on the lakes and rivers I fish. There are even SD cards available with more lake detail. Depths, obstructions etc..

I got the original eTrex (yellow)

I got the original eTrex (yellow) when I think it was the only model. I love it and use it for hiking, canoeing, driving, and flying. MapSource now makes entering waypoints much easier.

I now use my nuvi 200 exclusively for driving, but still use the eTrex for everything else.
