GPS Manners....

Ok so I am going to be traveling alot for Business over the next few months. Going to be renting some of the time and Cabbing it some others. If I bring my Nuvi along is considered bad manners to turn it on while in a cab if they dont have a gps and ask them to follow its directions.

Has anybody ever done this?

The way I look at it, you

The way I look at it, you can do whatever you want, you are paying him. Now that doesn't mean that he is actually going to do it. But it worth a try!

gps manners

You may know that the gps doesen't always provide the best route. this is especially true in the city. I would guess that the cabbies have the knowledge to give them a "best" route when traveling through traffic etc. I would bring the gps along but don't be surprised if the cab drivers use their experience to develop a route.

That is true! But I have

That is true! But I have also known cab drivers to go a "bit out of the way" to run up time. It happened to me in Charlotte, NC when I had my accident. I know that we past the same dang place like 3 times.

They very conveniently leave the model number out of the product description - I hate when they do that. If it is anything less than the Nuvi 360, you can do better at Costco. But it could be even better, you just can't tell by their description.

Didn't mean to encourage thread jacking with my previous post, but you could always use it to see how far off the cabbie takes you. I agree with the others that a cabbie will know traffic patterns that may cause them to take a different route, but it never hurts to double check. If they're close, you don't have to say anything (no harm-no foul). If not, who cares if you challenge them - they're the one trying to cheat you!

I agree

Hi,

I agree with gregb882. When it comes to taking a cab in big & often traffic jam city, it is best to leave it up to the cabby as they have the local knowledge which is irreplacable.

However, leave it on for raincheck or saving the tracks if you often keep going back & fro the same place.

I guess you get my drift, in other words, it is fine to on it.

GPS Manners

I would let the GPS show me the route the cabbie is taking. I would hope the cabbie is trying to provide you with the most reliable route based on his knowledge. However, I have heard of cabbies trying to take advantage of an out of towner, taking a roundabout direction. If you see something that does not look right, it certainly would not be bad manners to call this to the attention of the driver.

Yeah, if you see the cabby

Yeah, if you see the cabby take you a circuitous route, gently remind the cabby...

"shouldn't you be turning right at that previous intersection?"
