Charging Nuvi 250

When I plug-in my nuvi 250 to my computer va USB cable the unit comes on and shows a icon on the bottom of the screen showing it's connected to the computer.
When I try and turn it off to charge it nothing happens.
I also tried to turn it off BEFORE the maps load and then I get the "Charging Battery" message. In a few seconds it turns on and goes back to the connected to computer icon.
Is there anyway to get the unit it stay in the "Charging Battery" screen?

.

When the nuvi is connected to the computer via USB, it goes into USB Mass Storage Mode. Hence the picture of the nuvi connected to a computer that shows up on the nuvi's screen. And thus the nuvi shows up as a "drive" on your computer.

It also will charge via the USB port.

You can't "turn it off" when it is in this mode, but reset assured that it is charging.

Actually, at least with the

Actually, at least with the 350, you can turn it off. Just plug it in and then once it gets into the computer mode, use the 'eject device' in the system tray and then let it boot up and then turn it off, it then goes into charging mode.

Charging

Thanks for the info, but it doesn't work for the 250. If I try that Vista detects the GPS as a USB device again.

Really? I am going to have

Really? I am going to have to test that on our Vista box at work. If so, that really sucks!

I wish that all my gadgets would charge on usb, very nice to not have 6 different chargers when I travel. My work phone, gps does, but not my personal phone or headset.

I'm not sure I understand what the problem is. Why not just leave it the way it is?

Ok, I am lost agin, MM, what do we need to leave the way it is?

The OP was complaining that the nuvi can't be turned off while it's connected to the computer.

I'm not sure I understand why that's an issue. Why not just leave it connected and charging?

Why is it necessary to try to turn it off?

Oh ok, I get it now...well

Oh ok, I get it now...well here is one reason that my wife states all the time,

"Cut that dang thing off, I can't sleep with that light on"

But as you state, it isn't that big of a deal, I just lay it down face down...lol.

She hates....

1) Blinking light on headset while charging
2) GPSr
3) Work Phone
4) Personal phone
5) router
6) Computer
7) Cable modem
8) VOIP device

She says it looks like a server room, which she has only seen one once...lol.

May Not be necessary, but ...

If the GPS is not being used, why not use the AC adapter to charge the device (assuming the battery is not completely dead)?

1. If the computer has limited USB ports, why waste them charging a device that's not being used?
2. All USB ports have specifications which include detailed requirements on current limitations through the power interface. Why not use this power to charge the battery instead of using it to run an unused unit?
3. Electronic devices have a "Mean time between failures (MTBF)". Why waste this time by leaving the GPS on if you have an option to turn it off?

Most (if not all) GPS manufacturers include an AC adapter. Why not use it?

Well, I was going to say that as well. But I know that some people want to charge it via USB at work or when traveling and don't want to carry the A/C adapter with them.

No AC Adapter

Most of the lower number Nuvis do not include an AC adapter in the box - the 250 included. I had to purchase one as an accessory for my 350. When my 350 is connected to the USB port, I can turn it off and it reverts to charging mode. It won't turn on again until I "dismount" it from the port.

By lower number, I assume you mean nuvi 2xx models ... the nuvi 350 comes with an ac adapter. Click on 'In the box' at:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=6290

My adapter will fit in my shirt pocket, my computer won't! Adapters can be had for less than $18; even at twice the price, indispensable!!

(Incidentally, Garmin's website, as well as other sites, indicate the nuvi 250 doesn't come with a USB cable ... so even that has to be purchased separately.)

RT - when I bought my 350

RT - when I bought my 350 (18 months ago - right after the 3XX series intro), they were not included in the box. Realizing how indespensible an AC charger is, I immediately purchased one. I use both the AC charger and the USB port to keep it charged. I try not to go anywhere without the vehicle charger (knowing the battery life isn't the greatest), but will on occasion venture 200 or so miles without it. Just before the end of that trip, I'm getting the warning that the battery is kaput.......

Charger -

Do you not have an auto (DC) adapter to keep it charged when you are on trips?

Vehicle Charger

I do have one (as indicated), but prefer not to use it for shorter trips.

nuvi 2x0

My nuvi 200 did not come with an A/C adapter and it cannot be turned off when connected to a USB port. If I "Stop" it with the Toolbar Icon it will turn off and not charge. Windows apparently cuts power to the port when it stops a device because the nuvi doesn't say it is charging as it does when it is turned off using the Car Adapter.

No AC Adapter

My Nuvi 200 didn't come with an ac adapter and I didn't think anything about it until I took it on vacation to DC. I was going to use it to help navigate my way around when walking around the city but realized that I didn't want to leave it in the car overnight to charge it. I just used the gps unit to find a Best Buy along my way and stopped in and bought an adapter. I haven't used it since but it is nice to have.
