Is there one GIANT file to download for all POI's?

I have spent the past 4 hours downloading all of the different poi's for my Garmin c580, and was wondering if there is a one large file I can download that covers everything? If not, it would be a great invention.
Thanks,
Ryan

Might Be - But

That would be nice Allstar, but personally, I could care less about 80% of what I'd end up with in that (rather large) file. By default, Custom POI files should be specific to an individuals interest. I have captured only those files that I care to ever visit, or have my unit notify are in the proximity. For me - the separate files are the best way to go........ Maybe it's just me......

Use POIEdit for one BIG POI

allstar you can combine as many POI's as you like into one BIG POI by using the 'Batch Convert' feature found in POIEdit 2007.

Remember though, you'll only be able to have ONE sound file and ONE icon associated with that new file!

All POI in one file? Can the

All POI in one file? Can the navi handle so much data?

IMHO

In my Humble Opinion that would be a waste of memory - Probable 60 -75% of the POI's are already in the built-in POI's that come with the mapping software.
I guess I'm just not a Krispy Kreme, Dunkin Donut freak or Junk Yard Dog !

Usually when I'm in a strange location I can usually find what I want by taking a couple minutes and searching in the built-in data files !

Since 2 cents ain't worth anything anymore - that's my 10 cents worth !

One Big File

The whole idea behind custom POIs, is to have only the things that you want to be shown. If you want everything, then open the biggest POI you have in wordpad, then open each of the other POIs and cut & past everything into the first one. Order is unimportant, as the GPS unit shows them by proximity to your current location.
If all you want to do is get a good beer, then you want a list of breweries not Walmarts.

Blasphemy!!!!!!

smile

How could anyone not be a Krispy Kreme freak?!

However, I agree that I don't see the value (for me anyway) in one huge file. I would much rather load and unload the ones that I want when I want them. Too me that's a big value in being able to load our own.

For example, I just loaned my Zumo to some friends taking a trip to the northeast. I deleted all my stuff and loaded some stuff that would be of interest to them and that were applicable to the areas in which they are traveling.

Krispy Kreme ??

Too much sugar for me! Heck I'm so sweet I had Dunkin Donuts add vinegar to my coffee to tone me down a bit just this morning!! smile Where did your friends travel in the northeast? I've been working on Cape Cod (Hyannis to be specific) for a week or so with quite a bit more to do there. So far my C580 has done well..

They are going to Stowe, VT for a few days to peep at the leaves. Then they are going to stay in Newport for a few days and will probably make a day trip to Martha's Vineyard one of those days.

My parents live on Cape Cod. (My dad used to work at WHOI.) I agree that the fall is the best time there!

Hi Ken
This time of year is indeed nice here and the crowds are less dense which helps me get my work done. I am working on Main St. so it's a busy place!

Hey MM,
I worked in Barre Vt. a couple weeks ago and it was beautiful up there! Odd that you mention it but I have also been working at Newport Airport too.. Small world eh? What did your Dad do at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute? I live about 40 mins. from Hyannis and I enjoy working on the Cape. How did you end up down south? Other than the winter I like it up here.

Back to the question ....

If you're referring to the nuvi, yes. Unless you're really going to "load 'er up" you shouldn't have a problem. If you would run out of room, you can remove the voices you aren't using as well as the vehicles. Then there's alway the SD card.

Hope this answers your question.

Vermont is beautiful, I agree. I hope that the traffic isn't too bad with all the leaf peepers.

I love Newport. That's why I suggested that they go there on the way back. I hope they have a great time. And hopefully having the GPS unit will come in handy.

My dad was in the Navy, so we moved around a bit. I went to college down here and ending up staying.

Here's a link to what he did at WHOI. He retired from there about 2 years ago but is still working on some related projects.

I'm with allstar5150...

I may not want EVERY POI available for my GPSr, but, I keep hitting the 32 files in a sub-directory limit from POILoader. Argh.

Therefore, I'm forced to combine like POI into every larger files, e.g. combine all steak house POI into one .CSV or .GPX, which make editing/updating that much harder.

Take Heart

For those that use the individual State Rest Area
POI files - take heart ! You might be able to reduce the number of POI folders.
The restyled, recalculated and hopefully better Combined Lower 48 Rest Area listing is finished. I'm just going over it to check for text formatting variations. Should be uploaded to Miss POI early next week!
Although there are 92 more individual lines of coordinates the total memory requirements have been reduced by about 35 %.

Sorry, my bad.

I found this!

http://koa.poi66.com/maps/

all KOA's in the usa in one file, very nice site, and you can download as 14 different file types depending on what you need!

Yokay

Why did you quote me in your last post. I don't care if you want all KOAs. The point I was making was that I DO NOT want a giant file that includes KOA (camping to me is Holiday Inn - Express), and I could care less about half the stuff found at this site (POI-wise). The folks are great on this board, but please do not quote (our of context)the point I tried to make to the original poster.

Thank you.........

Not Mine

Bob - I can't take credit for that file (wish I could). That belongs to another subscriber. I agree, however, that it is a great file. He even captured our field, which at the time had only been open for about 6 months.

Cheers....... Joel

OPPS ..

Sorry, your right.. Will have to send a email to him.. hope he will update it. BTW where do you play? I live in NY and have some great places to go to.. A old man like me, playing paintball.. what a site to see.. but gotta love it!!

Me not play!

Yo Bob..... I don't play paintball. My son's field (On Target Paintball GA)is just South of Macon GA. I keep his books for him (hence the CFO), and operate his "pro-shop" on Saturdays while his wife is delivering mail. My tagline says it all! If it issues pain - it ain't for me (grin).... I bet we are a WHOLE LOT cheaper to play than you are use to!

Hehe

You are right.. But still is fun.. here in ny it is on the $$$ side than other states. Have you ever tried it? I love it will even play in the snow.. lots of fun.. That is why I want a updated ver of that great poi.. The guys here at work all love to play no matter how old you are.. we get alot of players together and go to differnt fields.. Wish I could get to GA (BTW when I was stationed in NC, I use to go to Malcom a fews times great place, had a VERY good time there!!)

KK no, PB yes

That means "Krispy Kreme no, Panera Bread yes"

I would love to have all the recently opened Panera Breads in my area (Fairfield County, Connecticut) and elsewhere.

Even though my maps version says it is 2008, too many times when I am looking for a POI such as restaurants, there are merchants etc. in my Nuvi that have been closed for up to 2 years or conversely those that have opened in the last 2 years or so are NOT in my Nuvi.
