Backing Up Favorites

I am getting ready to install the Map Update on my 2730 and wanted to back up my Favorites. I don't have very many of them, but the few I have, I wanted to save them by backing them up.

I put my 2730 in the "USB" mode and looked for the .gpx file and there is no .gpx file to be found.

I tried the poi file too and it's not there either.

All I could find was the POI.GPI file.

What am I missing? What am I doing wrong ?

I know I could probably backup using MapSource, but I still want to know why I can't find the .gpx file.

Thanks for any assistance.

Tim

Look for current.gpx under Garmin\gpx

I just looked again... and

I just looked again... and all I have under the "Garmin" folder is:

fs_image.ver
gmapprom

and three sub-folders:

POI
VOICE
XM

Yet, I KNOW I have favorites on my 2730.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for the help.

Maybe this unit just doesn't make them available this way?

Tried it... still no luck. Even tried to "Unhide" system operating files too.

Anyone have either a 2730 OR a 7500 ?

Thanks, Tim

Backing up favourites

Are you talking about backing up your favourites OR backing up Custom POIs?

Backing Up Favorties

I want to back up my Favorites, not any Custom POI's.

I don't know what file they are in or where the file is located.

backing up files

You've got my stymied a bit on this one. I can find teh file quite easily on my nuvi so we should be able to locate it on your machine - somewhere.

I presume it is NOT on an SD card somewhere and there ARE favorites to be found? (I know stating the obvious but sometimes it helps!)

Under the main menu for the drive for the GPS there are a number of folders (I have Audible/MP3/Garmin/JPEG). For the fun of it, I presume you have checked each of the other directories for a GPX file.

OK let's go to the Garmin directory.

As you indicated you have a number of sub-directories. Check each one to see if the GPX file is there.

If not then try the following:

Copy the entire drive to another spot on your computer; back on the GPS; change one of your favorites and see which file was changed by comparing to the files on the other drive.

It may give you a clue if, for some reason, your GPS does not store the favorites as a GPX file.

Search

You didn't mention your operating system, so I'm going to assume XP:
1. In addition to selecting Show hidden files and folders and unselecting Hide protected operating system files, also make sure Hide extensions for known file types is unselected.
2. Goto Start/All Programs/Accessories/Windows Explorer.
3. Find your main GPS root folder and right-click on it. Then select Search.
4. Type *.gpx in the All or part of the file name window and click Search.

This will give you all of the .gpx files on the GPS. You can open each one by right-clicking on each one, goto Open with, select Choose Program, and select Wordpad and click OK. Viewing the Wordpad display will tell you if it's your Favorites file.

Good luck.

Like Birchtree said, I would

Like Birchtree said,

I would copy the whole garmin folder into your local drive....that's what i did to my ex-660 and you can changes things in the garmin as you have a back up in your computer desktop...trial and error.

What about downloading the Favorites into MapSource or EasyGPS from the 2730 and then loading them to the new unit in the same manner?
