Map upgrades for the C330

I read with interest the discussion on free/paid map upgrades from Garmin. So I called Garmin Tech support for an upgrade for my C330 and was told that if I upgrade I would loose the Canada map. I have to assume that the tech support person is correct and so I will not upgrade. It's just something to keep in mind for those of you who want to upgrade your C330.

With an SD card no loss

You can have Canada, Alaska, etc. with a SD card in your c330. You do need a way to write to the SD card, either a built in device on your computer, or as I did go to Walmart and buy their cheapest card reader/writer. A 512m SD card is sufficient. Use Map Update that comes with the new version and pick what you want to load on your SD card (not with c330 hooked up to your computer or SD card loaded in the c330). Place SD card in your unit and you have everything you had before with updated information.

About to try it

But just want to make sure I use Map Update (????) or MapInstall to get Canada etc on SD card. I have the DVD, I have the SD card, I have the reader !

Please verify !!!
thanks !

Both are loaded onto your PC when you install from the DVD.

Canada & Alaska loaded on SD Card

I read with interest about loading the maps that were unable to be fit on my C330 after updating to the 2008 Map Update for North America. I successfully loaded North America, and then tried to load the balance on an SD card (after removing my GPS unit & inserting an SD card). I could not figure how to use "Map Update" to do this.
The previous comment said Map Update was loaded on my computer, but it does not appear to be.
Perhaps I misunderstood something...
I would appreciate any assitance that can be given.

.

It's MapInstall that you are looking for. And you probably need to run the MSI file on the DVD to get it installed. Search for the MSI file on the DVD.

It's Map Install

It's Map Install you want and should be loaded on your computer and under Garmin at the "Start" Menu if you used the defaults during install. You DO need a way to write to the SD card directly, NOT while it is in your c330. If your computer has a SD card reader/writer that WILL work. If not buy the cheapest one you can find that will work with a SD card. When you use Map Install it will find the SD card, DO NOT have your c330 plugged in to your computer via USB. Select the maps you want to install, I picked Alaska and all the Canada Providences. Then continue the install process. A file will be written to your SD card. Remove the SD card from your computer card reader/writer, place it in the c330 and you will discover that you have access to these maps and their respective POI's. Hope this helps...

Map Upgrades for the C330

When installing the data to my GPS from the 2008 update disk I thought I used the defaults, but Map Source and Map Update were not installed on my computer. I found them on the update disk and installed them manually, but the maps don't seem to be able to be unlocked. The unlock code I have is the one supplied with my original disk for my Garmin C330 when ourchased over 12 months ago.
Getting a bit frustrated because it seem relatively easy when I reads how other have installed Canada on an SD card.
We are planning on going on vacation in the next few days and will likely travel into Canada at some point on this trip.
By the way, I am grateful for the assistance, the frustration is directed at myself for not being able to do what appears to be so simple...

How I did this on a C530

I posted this under another thread, and will paraphrase my information here:
My daughters update CD came, and she loaded it. When the disk autoran, it prompted her to choose from 'lower 48' or Canada, Alaska, Hawaii. She chose lower 48, and it loaded to her GPSr fine. This process did NOT install Mapinstall or any other Garmin software onto her PC. I wanted to put the rest of the maps onto the SD card, so I went to work...
First, I wanted to get Mapinstall onto the PC. To do this, I

  • Loaded up the 2008 DVD
  • I cancelled the installation
  • I opened 'my computer' and selected to explore the DVD
  • I went to: \windows\msi and ran CNNT2008Update_ENU.msi

This installed Mapinstall onto her PC and put the shortcut on her desktop. However when I ran it, it told me that the 2008 maps were present, but locked. I needed to unlock them, but I could not find her unlock code. She did not remember having one for 2008. I found the unlock code on her GPSr. To do that,

  • I went back to my computer and opened the drive letter for the GPSr (not the SD card)
  • I went to \garmin and found a file ending in .unl
  • I copied that file and pasted it on her C:\ directory
  • I opened that .unl file with notepad.exe
  • There in front of me was the entire unlock code

I copied the code into the clipboard, and went back to Mapinstall. When prompted, I pasted the code in, and voila! the maps were unlocked.
From there, it was a simple matter to select the missing maps and install them on her SD card.

1. Using the C330, you load the Canadian Map or U.S. Maps directly to the unit and another to your SD Card.
a. Example: You load the U.S. map directly to your C330.
b. After you load the maps directly to your C330, MapSource will automatically be installed which will give you the option to load additional maps to your SD Card.
c. If MapSource doesn’t pick up your C330 SD Card, you can use a card reader/writer or a digital camera as a storage device to load the maps.
Good luck! smile

You can get a new C340 from Amazon for less than $250.

Why buy C330 with C340 down to $250.

Can't find the unlock code to get maps on SD card

Hi Guys, I followed the directions and got MapInstall on my PC, but I can't get past that point because I don't see my GPS device showing up on My Computer as a drive. I have a C330. Can anyone tell me how to get the unlock code so that I can put Canada on my SD card? How can I view the device on my computer to find the unl file?

Thanks so much for the help!

The C330 will not show up on your PC as a drive. You need to use a separate card reader attached to your PC. You can then see that card reader (and your SD card) as a drive, and proceed from there.

Got it

Thanks guys. I got it. I don't know what happened, but when I used the shortcut from the desktop, it asked for the unlock code. I tried using the unlock code that orignially came with my unit, but that didn't work. What finally worked was when I went through start menu, programs, garmin, MapInstall, which seemed to boot up the program differently and it worked great. I plugged in the card reader, set the device as the card reader, selected Canada, Alaska, and whatever else I wanted, and it generated the file and put it on the card just great. Thanks so much for everyone's help. This message board has saved me so much time and frustration with this. This is really great now.

If anyone else needs more specific instructions, feel free to email me at mattandleah@gmail.com

thanks again,

Having a problem with this part of the instructions - there is no drive letter for my GPS, so I am not sure how to get the unlock code.

I also tried going through the start menu, as someone posted below, but it still says I need to unlock the maps.

Garmin Website if registered

If you registered you GPSr with garmin, the unlock codes are listed in your account.

The c330 doesn't show up as a drive. You need to put the SD card in a card reader and do it that way. The unlock code for the update came with the update.

Thanks!

Awesome, that worked perfectly. Thanks!

1 more question

When I got the 2008 Map Update DVD, I installed Canada and Alaska on the unit. If I am now going to load the rest on an SD card, should I first get rid of the Canada and Alaska on the GPSr, load USA on the GPSr, then load Canada and Alaska on the SD card?

Or should I be able to keep Canada and Alaska on the GPSr, and load USA on a 512MB SD card?

Yes, you can keep Canada and

Yes, you can keep Canada and Alaska on your gps and yes, you can load the US on a SD card. However, 512mb will not be sufficient. I think you'll need a 2gig card for it.

I actually did the opposite on my c330. I loaded Alaska and Canada on a 512mb SD card and US on my GPSr.

Awesome, so off to the store to get a 2 gig SD card

And you will see a little asterisk (*) by the C330 that indicates the map update is limited on that unit.
