GM Nav System Failure

The nav system on my 2022 GM pickup failed this week. The adaptive cruise control also quit at the same time, along with the speed limit display. A dash warning light came on and a message on the dash display said "Adaptive Cruise Control Temporarily Unavailable".
I took it to the dealer who said a firmware update was required. It isn't something the owner can do. Since it's out of warranty, they charged me $200 for labor to do it. Nothing was replaced on the vehicle!
Apparently, GM can decide to change firmware and disable nav systems, along with other features, on who knows how many vehicles with no advance warning?? The dealer said the firmware is normally done along with the $450 map update, which I refuse to pay for.
I really don't care about the nav system since I use my Garmin. I don't think it's fair though for GM to disable other vehicle features if I don't buy their maps!!
Anyone else have this happen on their GM vehicle?

thoughts
We have a 2025 Chevy which doesn't truly have NAV, it has google maps, where it relies upon cellular that is free for 8 years.
On the adaptive cruise--since 60 miles (now 7k), the forward collision would be disabled randomly, and when that happened, no cruise, no collision. Restarting would not fix it. For whatever reason, parking, then coming back, it would work again. They are in fact replacing the front cam next week as the part came in--but, it's never happened again since they diagnosed it. The tech's notes said cannot communicate with the cam through the GM software, who knows, he's under the gun maybe he made it up.
She just got a GM update yesterday over the air--GM Update 661.21 which is for 2024-2026 models. Once it was done I checked to see if it did what it was supposed to.
Yes, it did. Now YouTube, Amazon Prime, HBO, etc. can be watched on the dash. Tried it. When the vehicle is not in park, it is blocked.
Did we ever think that this is what automotive would be about when we got older? I didn't. It's zero about driving, it's about taking your living room with you when you are not home.
p.s. I really do like the google maps over Nav, and, the 100% free Spotify. I'm hearing tunes I have not heard in 40+ years. Other than the free XM for life in my daily driver, I'm good with never touching XM again. Crazy. btw a coworker with 2 kids asked me how old I was, so I told him. I'm a good 5 years older than his own dad. Yet I still have a decade to go to retire, go figure.
Updated my VW software recently
I started getting a message that my vehicle software needed updating, but it was something you did yourself wirelessly. The warning message was a bit ominous about how you could not operate the vehicle for around a half hour or longer during the update process. Reading a bit online, that might not be entirely true. But I just did it while the car was parked in the driveway and it was no big deal.
Looking on their site, the main purpose of the update was (apparently) the nav system - which I don't even have, LOL. But yeah, the whole thing is a bit concerning, seems like a bad update could "brick" your car.
