Another Wikipedia rabbit hole, on a GPS topic

Real-time Kinematic Positioning is a technique using GPS signals plus analysis of the carrier phase to lock in sub-centimeter position accuracy. You can recognize when surveyors are using it because of the grey-ish dome on top of the pole. It's especially good at measuring accurate position relative to a base station at a known location, which is kind of exactly how surveying works.
