Apple has released iOS 18.3 and iPadOS 18.3, bringing significant updates to iPhones and iPads. These software updates introduce enhancements to Apple Intelligence features and address various bug fixes. The new versions include improvements to visual intelligence capabilities, allowing users to interact with their devices in more intuitive ways.
One big note to pay attention to is that Apple Intelligence is now enabled by default in iOS 18.3/iPadOS 18.3, so if that is something you want control over make sure to check your settings.
Users can now manage notification settings more easily with the latest update. This change streamlines the user experience, making it simpler to control which apps can send alerts and how they appear. The update also includes security improvements, ensuring devices remain protected against potential threats.
Apple says do this…
it apparently addresses a critical vulnerability. See https://appleinsider.com/articles/25/01/27/dont-wait-to-upda...
Took my 9th gen iPad about 30 minutes.

Wow 30 Minutes
Wow 30 minutes to update a newer iPad. I will do this overnight when I'm not using the Apple gear. Not looking forward to a whole 'nother round of prompts on each eligible device to please enable Apple Intelligence. Bite Me! If you're so smart, Apple Intelligence, surely you know from everything you know about me that I have Zero Interest in enabling this. If that changes, I know how to turn it on.

No prompts yet
So far and on two 9th gen iPad we haven’t received any prompts other than to tell us the update was successfully installed. AI by the way wasn’t installed on my iPad. Apparently it is only installed on models with M1 and later chipsets.

Intelligence enabled by default now??
You won't see prompts if you don't have an M1+ chip, but this website:
https://thehill.com/homenews/nexstar_media_wire/5110687-late...
...claims that this 18.3 update enables Apple Intelligence by default, though you can manually turn it off. LOL. Adoption rates a little lower than you'd like, Cupertino?!
I just stumbled on that story at the next website I went to browse. I don't if it's correct or not. See if Apple Intelligence got enabled "accidentally" on your device upgraded to 18.3, assuming you have M1 chip or higher and Intelligence wasn't enabled before.

Apple Intelligence is now opt-out
Now enabled by default, you have to disable it manually. That's all fine and dandy but here's the rub...
If your device supports Apple Intelligence, all files required for it will remain on your device, even if you disable it within Settings. You cannot manually delete nor get rid of the files which can consume (currently) up to ~7 GB (this will increase as more "features" are added).
I don't need nor want Apple Intelligence (nor any other kind of AI) on any of my devices yet Apple is holding 7 GB of storage space hostage.
Apple states in an article recently posted (sorry, no link) that this consumed storage space will be freed when the device & iOS/iPadOS requires the storage space.
Let the updater beware...

IPadOS 18.3 Available
I updated both my personal and work iPhones yesterday.
https://9to5mac.com/2025/01/28/ios-18-3-includes-starlink-sa...
Apple first introduced satellite connectivity features to the iPhone with the release of the iPhone 14 in 2022. The capability allows users to communicate with emergency services when out of range of traditional cellular connectivity. iOS 18 further upgraded the functionality to let users send messages to friends and family using satellite connectivity.
Apple initially partnered with Globalstar to power these satellite connectivity features for iPhone users. Now, Bloomberg reports that Apple has also been “secretly working with SpaceX and T-Mobile” to add Starlink satellite connectivity to the iPhone.
T-Mobile and SpaceX announced their partnership in 2022, and T-Mobile had previously only said that phones from Samsung would support Starlink connectivity. The carrier opened beta registration for the program in December.
Bloomberg’s report says, however, that T-Mobile has recently started allowing a “small number of iPhones” to test an early version of the Starlink service. The expansion is tied to this week’s release of iOS 18.3. Apple, however, didn’t mention the change in the update’s release notes.
In a message sent to select users, T-Mobile said: “You’re in the T-Mobile Starlink beta. You can now stay connected with texting via satellite from virtually anywhere. To start experiencing coverage beyond, please update to iOS 18.3.” T-Mobile also updated its support website this week to confirm that its Starlink satellite service now supports iPhones.
T-Mobile’s current implementation of Starlink connectivity works for texting, but the two companies plan to expand functionality to include data and voice calls in the future.
Here’s how it will work: When a T-Mobile iPhone is in an area without cellular connectivity, devices that are part of the Starlink program will first try to pair with SpaceX satellites. Users will also be able to enable texting via the satellite menu for the Globalstar service or contact emergency services through Apple.
The initial version of Starlink is exclusively for texting. But SpaceX and T-Mobile have said that they plan to expand into data connections and voice calls in the future. The program also is only available in the US for now. That contrasts with Apple’s Globalstar service, which works in several countries. SpaceX is looking to expand Starlink to other carriers globally.
Bloomberg points out another key difference between Globalstar and Starlink satellite connectivity:
There’s another major difference between the two services. The current Apple feature requires users to point their iPhone to the sky to find a satellite. The Starlink option, meanwhile, is designed to work automatically — even when the phone is in a customer’s pocket.
T-Mobile says it expects to launch Starlink connectivity to everyone “sometime in 2025.” T-Mobile customers can sign up for the beta on the carrier’s website.

Regarding 18.3.1
Regarding 18.3.1 update:
Worked fine on wife's 14+..
On my 15, however, it corrupted the email password for Calendar and contacts, so these ceased, tossing me in an endless Verification Loop... Strangely, Same Email address/Password in Email's worked fine -Just Calendar and Contacts were affected!
Verizon (Cell Provider), blamed APPLE and would not touch it... Suggested APPLE store or Geek Squad..
No Apple stores for 100 or more miles away, in another state...
Went to Geek Squad, and told fellow that Verison sent me.. explained how this occurred at update...
He checked my phone and compared to wife's phone that worked fine. We share contacts and calendar...
He tossed, then reinstalled Email address for Calendar/Contacts
Not only did he FIX IT.... He didn't charge a thing, "All I had to do was Re-Link to wife's phone" I took his business card!
That was a couple weeks ago... Been fine since!
