Hello, new to the site and to owning a GPS

Hello all... My name is Heath, I just bought my first GPS, a Garmin c330... I wish I'd have gone with something nicer but Best Buy wants to keep 15% for restocking but hey, live and learn right... I think I'll wait for the tomtom go920 to come out and then upgrade... I like all the gizmos and such that the 910 and the 720 have... At least I assume that they'll release a 920 in a few/several months...

I've just spent about 2 hours DLing all of the custom POI files that I want... Now I get to go about figuring out how to get them onto my c330... I DLed the Garmin POI Loader... I just have to do some searches now and find out .cvs vs .gpx vs .zip and then the ones that just look like an Excel file... I'm thinking that I have a lot to learn...

Anyway, great site so far... Can't wait to learn more!!!

newbie here

hi everyone, im a newbie to this GPS stuff, just got my nuvi 660 a couple of days ago, i made a few trips with it already, first time i used it was we are 3 cars in convoy with three different brands, magellan, tomtom & my garmin, it made several re-calculations since i was just following the other cars to our destination, it was on my way back home when i made a one on one trip with it, so far so good, just with little lapses due to human error, anyhow it sent me home...
on the other instant, what i have noticed is i cant find some destinations on the built-in POI's,like dept store, wholesale clubs etc.,.. now i came across to this Garmin POI Loader and try to find something i could add on to my POI's and lead me to this website, i find everything here very helpful but my concerns are:
1. im hesitant to download bcoz im afraid it might mess up my GPS,
2. if i download load POI's is it necessary to download all the POI's in this site to my GPS?

need help... Thank you

Welcome. smile

You don't have to download everything. Download what interests you. You won't hurt the GPS. Read through the discussions before you make any changes.

You will learn plenty. Have fun! smile

bestbuy return policy......

I read the same info on the sales slip, but I called the store and the manager told me they have revolked the 15% stock return policy as long as you are within the 30 day time limit. I bought a c340 and thought I wanted something newer.. but after playing around with the 340 it is really what I wanted in the first place..

Welcome

Welcome bopphim, that little guy in your avatar sure is a cutie.

Once you have had the 330, I

Once you have had the 330, I am sure that you will want to stick with the garmin. Not that Tom Tom is bad, but once you have learned the 330, the others are easy to learn.

I, IMO, think that Garmin is more user friendly then the T2. My dad has a T2 510 (I believe) and although it has many great options, it took me awhile to figure out some of them and I haven't figured out all of them.

Most users here on this board seem to have Garmins as well, so there is a lot of support here.

Well the c330 is going back

Well the c330 is going back to best buy... It can't hold even close to all the POI's that I want and since you can't access them via an SD card on this machine that won't work either... To top that off I don't even have all the POI's that I want formated right just yet to get them onto the machine in the first place... I'm still having issues with the whole looks like an excel icon, but there is no .cvs or .gpx or any tags on the end of them...

I would agree with the ability (or 330's lack of) to utilize a SD card. So, exchange it for one that can, if that makes you happy.

As for the excel files...they are actually csv files that will latch on to the excel icon.
Right click on the icon and you can open with excel or notepad. Just be sure when saving to save as a csv file.
Read, read and read some more. As mentioned in other posts you can check out the faq section and the getting started section. It really doesn't take long once you catch on.

In most cases, the problem/question has already been addressed. Most can be found with patience and by searching the site.

If you can't find something by all means ask the questions. There are many people here willing to jump in and help out.

Excel should handle the .csv extension by default and it sounds like you have Windows set to not show the file extension for known file types (this is the default behavior). Therefore, a file name of x.csv would only show as x in a directory listing (with the appropriate Excel icon next to it).

Most of the time I can see

Most of the time I can see the extension. So if I check the file name on those and I don't see an extension can I just add the .cvs extension then?

Give it a try

Without seeing the file, I can't tell you for sure but I can't imagine any way that it would hurt. Add the extension, double-click on it and see what happens. If it is a true comma delimited file, Excel should be able to open it. As long as Excel can open it, and it looks "normal" to you, POI Loader should be able to handle it.
