For my southeastern PA friends...Free License Plate Replacement Event

Free License Plate Replacement Event

Is your license plate hard to read, damaged or peeling? Don’t get fined for driving with an illegible plate!

My team and I are helping neighbors replace their damaged license plates for free! Join us on Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Aston Township Fire Department. Local law enforcement will be onsite to determine if your plate needs to be replaced.

Registration for this event is required. Please RSVP by calling my office at 610-534-6680 or emailing RepKrueger@pahouse.net.

Drivers must bring an unexpired Pennsylvania driver’s license and current vehicle registration card. New plates are not issued at this event. Once your paperwork is processed, my office will call you to pick up your new plate.

we

had a "H" series license plate delaminate.

I went to our township PD and asked them to sign the DMV form so we didn't have to pay for a new plate. He told me you are the only person for whom I have ever signed this form. Most people generally are happy that their plate can't be read. It will be curious to hear back if you got a lot of turnout. I like to be on the up and up, so when you can't read my plate, I don't like it.

Also didn't know you were in Aston. We go to the Ice Works. My boy just started playing ice hockey this year and I am loving it. Makes me feel like a kid. I am excited watching practices, driving around, going to the store, helping him to put on his gear, etc. etc. The little things...kidding, now all we need is the $100k Suburban to go with the sport...

not my event

Not my event, just passing on something I saw. I'm a bit of a license plate geek among other things, like maps and birds. I do live near the Ice Works but in nearby Upper Chichester with an Aston Zip Code. The "My team and I" was a quote from PA State Rep. Leanne Krueger who is putting on the event, I just copy/pasted it here.

That said, I'm the type of person who wants everything to be perfect as far as not getting pulled over by police for stupid stuff for example worn out plates. Of course I've always had vanity tags and take care of them so that they don't get worn out.

I wish NY would do that.

NY not free?

Meaning it seems the event is simply to make it easy for people to get a replacement...maybe they don't know how (I didn't had to look online). Maybe they feel intimidated going to the PD and asking an officer to sign their form (a shop can also sign the form but they have no incentive to do so and that I can see as unpleasant).

We have a lot of defective plates in PA. When it happened to my wife's, that's how I learned it's actually a film on top of the embossed metal plate.

I noticed in NJ, a license plate is nothing more than a high quality printout. This imho opened the door to printing out fake plates and the ghost cars.

Sometimes free in NY

John, in NY if you want to retain the same license plate number then it is $20. You have to mail the completed application, a photograph of the peeling plates, and a $20 check or money order (made payable to ‘Commissioner of Motor Vehicles’) to the Custom Plates Unit. And that is because you are essentially getting a “custom” plate.

If you want the next available standard plate number free of charge, email dmv.sm.peelingplates@dmv.ny.gov. Put your plate number in the subject line and supply the following

name as it appears on the registration
address (if your address is not current, update your address before you send your email)
city, state and ZIP code
daytime telephone number
peeling plate number
a photograph of the peeling plates as an email attachment
DMV will send your new registration/windshield sticker with the new license plates.

Please note: Once you submit your request through email, your request is final. You cannot request changes.
