Windows 11 24H2

Windows 11 version 24H2 will be the first build to no longer boot on CPUs that do not comply with the POPCNT (population count) instruction.

POPCNT was added in SSE4.2 on Intel CPUs and SSE4a on AMD CPUs.

This will effect anyone that did a work around Win 11 install on pre 2007/2008 CPUs.

Isn't it interesting

They'd do this??

Never argue with a pig. It makes you look foolish and it anoys the hell out of the pig!

The technical side

The change can be read about in detail at https://www.pcmag.com/news/windows-11s-24h2-update-wont-boot....

But in general, if you are one of the people that used the year-old work around to install Windows on a Win10 machine, I would cease doing any future updates, at least temporarily.

Here's a more detailed

Here's a more detailed article https://www.tomshardware.com/software/windows/older-systems-...

How many are running win11 on a pre2008 based cpu? I have win11 installed in a i5 4590 - circa 2014. With a 1050ti it works exceptionally well as a htpc box. Why win11? Why not, it gives me an opportunity to test/play with win11 before switching other systems to it. Explorerpatch ftw - https://github.com/valinet/ExplorerPatcher

The oldest laptop I have here is one with a t9600 cpu, ironically a cpu from late 2008. This laptop is mostly a paperweight these days. It consumes too much power to do anything useful long term. The screen is failing - lower 1/3 is nothing but a solid white block. It does have hdmi output. Not sure what to do with it. Probably try to use it as a trade in for something at some point.

Yeah, it seems MS is not

Yeah, it seems MS is not going to support 10+ year old CPUs.

Try out Linux, it runs on just about anything.

Windows / Linux

Did that back when I was working. I put it on an old laptop to fart around with. Seemed to work much better on that old box than Windows. I loved the way it just automagically found and setup printers. No hassle getting Windows drivers and stuff. It was just something to fiddle with though and I never did get proficient.

On topic with this thread title: I still haven't gone to Windows 11. I did install it quite a while back but absolutely hated the way I couldn't set it to NOT combine tabs on the taskbar. I know that really irritated quite a few folks so they have hopefully fixed that idiotic blunder. If so, it "might" be worth a look again.

Agreed, linux is superior in

Agreed, linux is superior in most ways. More control and less overhead. I had choices when I set up my hypervisor. Ended up with proxmox over windows server. In fact, all of the vm's on it are opensource too - pfsense, truenas core, nextcloud, asterisk/freepbx, mailcow, and a few others I can't remember.

I was trying to update ms office on one of the boxes yesterday. The stupid activity bar just kept scrolling for a good 30 min before erroring out with a cryptic error. Ultimately discovered the firewall was blocking certain traffic to ms. The updater could have just reported connectivity issues in the first 2 min.

@Thrak, use explorerpatcher for win11, it will make the ui 99.9% comparable to win10, restores most elements nicely https://github.com/valinet/ExplorerPatcher . It's part of any win11 install I do. Also, windows decrapifier script removes lots of junk and telemetry. Group policy to disable automatic updates.
