Garmin branching out and leaving auto navigation behind

A friend just rode a bike 100 miles in Death Valley to raise funds for Juvenile Diabetes. In discussion he was telling me the “highs” that he recorded on his power meter. I mentioned I was isn’t that scale of biking, and asked for more details on the power meter. Turns out it is made by Garmin and costs about $1200. My friend says virtually every competitive cycyist has them.

They'll go where the money is...

I still use my Garmin for work but compared to updates to maps on my phone Garmin is a dinosaur. I go to a lot of new construction/new roads and addresses and Garmin just doesn't keep up and likely never will. What I need it for isn't what most do. If they can't monetize it from a profitability standpoint I get why they don't do it. They are finding the markets where they can make money.

A Ride To The Bone Yard

A 100 mile bike ride through Death Valley sounds like a ride to the Bone Yard.

Weather wasn’t a factor

This was the weekend of January 20th and my friend tells me the highest temperature he encountered was around 70 deg F and the lowest was slightly below 50 deg F. Total lack of rainfall which is typical of Death Valley. They (about 150 riders) raised $939,000 for the fight against Juvenile Diabetes.
