BBBike Extracts For Garmin

Is anybody here using maps from BBBike?

The Garmin maps available are:

Garmin OSM (Latin1)

Garmin Cycle (Latin1)

Garmin Leisure (Latin1)

Garmin Onroad (Latin1)

Garmin Ontrail (Latin1)

Garmin BBBike (Latin1)

Garmin OpenFietsMap Lite (Latin1)

Garmin OpenFietsMap Full (Latin1)

Garmin OpenSeaMap (Latin1)

Garmin OpenTopoMap (Latin1)

They are also available in (UTF-8) format.

Towards the bottom on this page it explains the differences between the various Garmin Styles.

https://extract.bbbike.org/garmin.html

After reading more about the various styles and, if I have enough room on my micro SD card, I am considering the following:

Garmin OSM (Latin1)(standard OpenStreetMap style)

Garmin Leisure (Latin1)(map style from freizeitkarte-osm.de, for outdoor activities. The .img file is ~30% larger than the osm/cycle file)

Garmin BBBike (Latin1)(map style from bbbike.de, for outdoor activities.)

Garmin OpenFietsMap Full (Latin1)(map style from OpenFietsMap.nl, for outdoor activities. Full version)

Garmin OpenSeaMap (Latin1)(map style from OpenSeaMap.org, the free nautical chart)

Garmin OpenTopoMap (Latin1)(map style from OpenTopoMap.org)

I did

I did obtain maps from BBike and loaded them on my eTrex in order to have maps on a recent tour which visited places near a few ports in north Africa, Sicily and the Iberian peninsula.

I spent some time trying to understand and choose among the formats, but overall it was not a great experience.

The eTrex screen is very small, which limits the utility of some of the map formatting. What device do you have in mind using them on?

A Garmin Zumo XT.

Display Size: 4.8”W x 2.7”H (12.1 x 6.8 cm); 5.5” diag (13.9 cm).

my eTrex is tiny by comparison

and your pixels are 1280x720

by contrast my eTrex is crippled, with just 176x220 pixels on a 2.2" diag screen.

The visual elements of the downloaded maps will be very different for you.

I suggest you try out the formats that seem possibly interesting to you for a location on which you can judge their usefulness to you.
