Bike Maps For Garmin Zumo XT

This is the second year with the e-bikes that I bought for my wife and I. I have tried an old cell phone and Google Maps for bicycle trails. I really prefer the look of maps on my Garmin Zumo XT.

So, with that in mind, can anybody here recommend any free bike maps that can be downloaded onto the Garmin Zumo XT?

Free Maps

Free maps are available at https://extract.bbbike.org/
The opening window will center on Berlin, Germany.

Select one of the Garmin latin1 formats (10 formats are available).
OSM is the one I find best for my Montana 610 for bicycling.
Other options include:
Cycle
Leisure
BBBike (I find this one too cluttered on my Montana)
OnRoad
OnTrail
OpenFietsLite
OpenFietsFull (also found to be too cluttered on my Montana)
OpenTopo
OpenSeaMap

You will have to provide your email address to be notified when the map is available for download.

After extracting the downloaded zip file, rename the img file to something recognizable (like New England.img)
You will also want to change the name of the map as it will appear on the GPS.
I use a free utility from Javawa: https://www.javawa.nl/downloads/software/JaVaWa_IMGname_Setu...

Then copy the img file to the Garmin or Maps folder in your GPS or its microSD card.

Another Source for "free" maps

www.openmapchest.org also offers "free" (with donations accepted). Those maps appear to be very similar to those at BBBike, OSM format..

Bike Maps For Garmin Zumo XT

Something that I didn't realize until a couple of days ago is that there is a Garmin Explore website. Until getting the Garmin Zumo XT in 2021, I have pretty much focused on automobile Garmin devices.

https://explore.garmin.com

I did use Mapsource years ago. I haven't used it in a long time and I don't think Garmin supports it any longer.

I have BaseCamp, but haven't used it a lot.

Now that I know about the Garmin Explore website I need to learn more about it. I am unclear when I would use BaseCamp vs. Garmin Explore. Maybe it depends on which GPS I am using.

My Route App (MRA)

I registered for My Route App (MRA) this evening and I am giving it a try. So far it does a nice job creating bicycle routes/tracks on bicycle trails.

Minnesota Bikeways

Another website that I have found to be helpful in finding bicycle trails in my area is Minnesota Bikeways. The green lines indicate off road trails. The blue lines indicate on road lanes. The brown lines are for off road mountain bikes. The magenta lines are other/unknown.

I prefer the paved trails that are away from regular roads. Having the green lines lets me see at a glance the trails I want to ride.
