Garmin Express Windows 7.17.1.0 issue — glitch or by design?

I installed GE 7.17.1 on my Win 11 desktop and as always, immediately went to Settings and unchecked "Always keep Garmin Express running in background" and confirmed that the Auto Launch box was unchecked. Most of us here do this with every update.

Much to my surprise, when looking at my Win 11's "Show hidden icons," there was the GE icon, happy as could be. A full Win 11 shutdown and reboot duplicates its appearance, even with confirming that the Always Background setting remains unchecked! I have never seen GE running in background after unchecking the Always background in previous versions of GE.

Going to Task Manager and looking at background tasks, there it is: Garmin Express (32bit), and showing after reboots and checking again that it's using 36.3MB of Memory after one reboot and 43.7MB after a second reboot. The task manager reports no CPU or Network activity and 0 or 0.1MB/s disk activity.

Can other Windows folks check and see what you find? Mac folks, what do you see?

Garmin Express on MacOS Catalina

Garmin Express only shows up in the Activity Monitor when I run it. I unchecked "running in background" years ago, and it has not changed with updates.

GE running.

It showed up on my hidden icons also even though all check marks removed. I went to the start up programs on Windows and removed it. Located in Apps ,startup then find GE and turn off.

Thanks for the confirmation and even more thanks for the quick fix. cool

I will note that Windows considers it to have a High Impact on Windows Startup.

Now we have another place to check and most likely fix for each new version of GE we install. sad

7.17.0

I had this issue after installing 7.17.0. I noticed that GE was starting even though the option was unchecked. For me, this issue went away with 7.17.1.

Check Windows startup group

Express starting on its own in spite of it having the background setting disabled in settings has also been reported on the Garmin forums as well.

One individual reports that the problem was discovered and corrected by going to Windows Task Manager, running it as an administrator, then select the Startup tab. Scroll down the list and make sure that Garmin Express is shown as disabled. To change the setting, right click the GE entry, then select disable.

Thaks for the Heads-up

Thanks CraigW.

I'm using Windows 10 and I found it using task manager as you said. I disabled it in the task manager startup tab. I will reboot and make sure that it does not come back.

disabled in startup

i disabled a few others quite a while back like steam , phone link , Cortina
