It it time for a new GPS? (voice directions stop working - Solved)

My most recent GPS for car navigation was a nuvi 3597. Suddenly it's become virtually useless for navigation.
- Having it navigate from home, I get verbal instructions on how to get out of my driveway and which direction to turn in at the end of the street. After that I get nothing verbal. The map shows which way to go, but the purple route track is usually not present.
- Route instructions at the top of the screen are useless.
- The speed limit indicator is no longer there.
- Lane assist has gone away.
- I will get verbal notifications of traffic conditions ahead.

A few years ago I made a backup of all the files on the unit and restored them to the 3597. This did not help.
I also did a system reset with the same results.

Is there some other thing I could do to restore my beloved 3597?

I would start by calling Garmin Customer Support.

I have found them to be very helpful.

Some thoughts

You likely are using a microSD card with a 3597. I once had similar flaky behavior with a 2689 and it was caused by the card. I initially tried a new card and did a map update and behavior became normal. I then forced a format of the old card and now use it for a backup.

So maybe try a new card, something like a 16 GB or 32 GB and see what happens.

Check

Have you another map installed? All those symptoms happened to me when I had inadvertently left a second map selected that covered the same area as the Garmin map. Even though the Garmin map displayed nothing else worked correctly, deselecting the other map resolved the issue.

I've had the same problem with more than one map activated.

Also check to be sure the unit is running the latest firmware.

memory card

I got the same issue with picky memory from staples store likely sandisk something. same issue as previous comment, definitely to try it new one if you can. Good luck!

Thanks

Thank you one and all for the suggestions.
I do only have the 2024.10 maps active.
Yes, the latest firmware has been installed.
I've also just recopied those backup files of the entire GPS made two years ago to retain my customized settings which were lost after the master reset. After that I re-updated the map on GE.
I'll buy another 32gb microSD card to see what happens and get back if it solves the problem.

Success

I did not purchase a new microSd, but instead performed a full reformat of the existing microSD. I also restored the 3597 to the backup made 2 years ago. I then let Garmin Express do its work.
Voila! The GPSr is now back to normal.
Thanks again for the many suggestions.
