Always Carry A Crayon In Your Wallet

From time to time I read about advice to always carry a crayon in your wallet. In reading through the advice it makes absolutely no sense and the longer you read, the less sense it makes. Why would anyone want to carry a crayon in their wallet? It seems it would become melted and make a mess of your wallet.

I'm posting this to ask is anyone else has read or come across this subject? It is about the dumbest advice I've ever heard but, over the years, the subject keeps showing up like a bad penny at various places on the worldwide web.

My guess is this advice is simple a bad joke that keeps perpetuating itself. I don't get it.

Has anyone read or have any thoughts about the subject? Inquiring minds want to know.

Like they always say

Crayon

I read that a lot and have never figured out why. Same as put a water bottle on top of your tire.

I suppose some of the reasons makes sense

But, in my 75 years on this earth, I have never had an occasion where I needed a crayon. Sounds like someone should put their time to better use. My opinion!

Best to consider the individual merits

The water bottle thing was a farce and you can read about the background at https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/bottle-tires-parked/.

But some things you may read can possibly be beneficial. Pre-pandemic I did a cruise and the strap from some simple flip flops pulled out. So I would have had to walk to the ship's pool barefoot, unpleasant at best with the deck being hot. The wife reminded me of something I had once read (and acted on) and that was to carry in your wallet the small plastic square, about 1 inch x 1 inch, used to tie off the bags for bread. That slipped over the rubber strap held it properly for weeks. I had slipped one into my wallet and it worked beautifully.

Well it was..

It was a story I've heard before. It almost sounds like this: "It Could Save a Child's Life
Children in a life threatening situation can't always ask for help. But, it you spot a child that may be in trouble, you can slip them a crayon. Children's lives have been saved when they've written notes asking for help". I've heard this before while spending time as a P.O.
