Garmin 3590LMT Map Size

I made the mistake of updating my map from the 2018 version to the 2023.20 region but then lost my voice commands. Apparently I have to install the FULL version instead of a region however I need a uSD card for the latest version.

I've had uSD cards before and they are slower than the internal memory so if I can just download the last version that will fully fit on the internal storage then I'll be good for now.

With all the maps removed, I have 6.3GB of free space and wondering what is the largest North American map version that is ~6GB? Thank you!

Map Size

Apparently, according to the website, it's 3.74 GB. But try it and if you don't have enough room, it will tell you.

My advice...

First, let me say welcome to the POI Factory forum. Stick around for a while and take a look at our FAQ's. There is lots of valuable information available in the FAQs and we have many long-time knowledgeable members to help with questions.

My advice for what it's worth is to go ahead and use a micro SD card and install the full NA map. In my experience, the performance of the SD card does not have a major impact on the overall operation of the device.

One thing to think about is that the full 2023.20 CN NA map is (for the first time) delivered in two files because the total map exceeds the 4 GB file size limit for FAT32 storage devices. The largest map file contains the US map and the second file contains Canada and Mexico.

If you really want to do some tinkering, you can rearrange the files downloaded by Garmin Express to make sure the most critical files are in internal storage and less frequently used files are on the card. For example, you might want the US map and JCV (junction view) file in internal storage with the Canada/Mexico map, ASR (speech recognition) files and SID feature files on the SD card.

That said, my advice is still to just go the simple route, use a micro SD card and let Garmin Express take care of it.

With alandb. I have used this method for years and if it slows down at all, it is infinitesimal. I don’t think you will notice any difference at all.

3597

I tried to update the maps on my 3597 and was told this memory card will not work and i tried 3 different cards. One 16 gb and two 32 gb cards. Isn't there a way to format the card inside the 3597 i have quick formatted and slow formatted all 3 cards on my Windows 10 computer, these are not old cards either

According to the manual

According to the manual at https://static.garmin.com/pumac/nuvi_35x7_OM_EN.pdf there isn’t a way to format the card “inside” the device.

Are you formatting to FAT32?

new SD card

If using a new SD card, it comes formatted correctly. Just put it in the GPS. No need to format it again. For an older card, like John says, format it FAT32.

There is a method in Windows to format an SD card while inside the GPS. Never do that! There is too much chance of formatting the GPS memory! Use a separate memory card reader.

Yup used standard formatting. the cards weren't new . no reason the device should not use any of the 3 cards. Of course i have had the gps awhile and it was refurbished when i got it so i don't know what year it was built. It is not my only gps so i will survive . Thanks for the help

Stan393, Try this

Try the remedy, specifically on page 2, at https://forums.garmin.com/apps-software/mac-windows-software.... You’ll need to scroll to the bottom of page 1 to get to the page selection.

Also, make sure you are not using a hub in connecting to the PC.

Update On 3597

Ok i finally decided to try again on updating my Garmin 3597 last night i wound up leaving out the memory card and just doing the lower 49 states and was able to get it and my 2797 both updated with no problems. Pretty sure i had tried that before but either way it worked. Thanks for your help..Stan

Standard Formatting?

I suspect the problem is that the "standard formatting" on some computers is EXFAT and not FAT32. EXFAT is not compatible with many (most?) Garmin devices. We have seen this issue come up before in the forums. The dialog box should include a selection where you can change the formatting to FAT32 but some users have had problems finding it. If you are using a Windows computer, you can always do it with a command prompt:
FORMAT x: /FS:FAT32
Just make ABSOLUTELY SURE you are using the correct drive letter for the SD card and not the internal storage of the Garmin device.

What version map did you get doing it that way? I have to wonder if you got something that is significantly less than current.

Formating

I have never seen or used "Exformat" on a windows 10 computer much less used it. Not saying it isn't there just never had a reason to use it so for me "Standard formatting is Fat 32" but thanks anyway

You never answered my previous question as to what map you ended up with when leaving the card out?

exFAT handles extremely large file sizes such as those used in audio and video devices. I think if you had used a card from such a device, that had previously been formatted as exFAT, it will again be formatted as exFAT unless you specifically chose to do FAT32 from the drop down menu. I don't have a microSD card to test that at the moment.

Windows will always default to the file system type currently on the card. As you correctly point out, the end user has to select the file system type to format the card in if not using the last used one.

To eliminate any possibility of Windows screwing up the formatting, which in the past has happened, Stan should download the official format tool (SD Formatter) from the group who created and maintains the SD card standard (sdcard.org) and format his cards using that. It will detect the card and automatically select the proper format for it, according to the SD Association standards.

Does the SD Formatter work on microSD?

@John from PA

Yes it does. It even works with flash drives, though that isn't its main purpose.

I purchased a new toy today, a Garmin Dash Cam Mini2. I carefully formatted my 128GB High Endurance μSD card with the SD Association card formatter (which defaults to exFAT for cards greater than 32GB). Put the card in the dash cam and was told the card needed to be formatted. Hit the button to format and everything worked. Plugged the dash cam into my laptop and launched Disk Management. Seems that Garmin formatted the 128GB μSD in FAT32! Interesting YouTube video on the history of FAT32: "Blame Me: The Windows 11 Disk Formatter" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bikbJPI-7Kg).

Note this thread was titled "Garmin 3590LMT Map Size" and this content is with respect to a Dash Cam Mini2.

From the Dash Cam Mini2 manual..."The device requires a memory card formatted using the FAT32 file system. You can use the device to format your card using this file system."

You can format a card larger than 32GB to FAT32 under Windows. See https://www.howtogeek.com/316977/how-to-format-usb-drives-la.... Note that some of the content has already been mentioned by alandb.

The main reason I recommended Stan use SDFormatter was to ensure his MicroSD was set to its default format before placing it into his GPS, since he was having issues with his MicroSD card. Companies not adhering to the standards is far too common. smile
