I normally wait until there's a new map update to update GE because of this very reason. Garmin seems to update the updates to GE often enough to wait.
I don't run GE in the background, and it always tells me I have to update it for the map to proceed, so I see no need to update it every time one comes out for just GE.

3 updates in 4 days, proves my point of not updating until a new map comes out. Heck, I've even updated the day of a new map and an update to GE came out a day later. One and done for me, with each new map, and that's only because it's forced in order to apply the map update.
