Social Security payment was early

My wife and I have been getting our Social Security checks on the second Wednesday of the month. That's how it's worked from the very first payment over ten years ago. Well, this month we received our checks yesterday, Saturday, July 9, instead of this coming Wednesday, the 13th. Anyone else receive their SSA checks early this month?

I remember checks

From Day 1, I've used Direct Deposit of my SS. For me, it arrives on the 4th Wednesday without fail. I write under a half dozen checks a year and receive maybe up to one check annually.

I'll have to wait until later this month to see if its appearance in my account is on the expected 27th or if it's earlier.

Schedule published annually

The govt. publishes a schedule annually and it can be found at https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10031-2022.pdf. Normally checks are issued on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Wednesday of the month based on birth date but there is a Social Security Income (SSI) check issued on the 1st for those who receive both SSI and Social Security, or have received Social Security since before May 1997.

The schedule doesn't quite explain your situation. Perhaps the Post Office is really trying to improve.

July 13: Social Security payment for those with birthdays falling between the first and 10th of any given month.

July 20: Social Security payment for those with birthdays falling between the 11th and 20th of any given month.

July 27: Social Security payment for those with birthdays falling between the 21st and 31st of any given month.

My check shows PENDING with

My check shows PENDING with a 7/13 clearance. My State paycheck for my P/T bus job always show up PENDING 3-5 days before the last day of the month.

It's hard to let go

I know SS is not an entitlement, but it does make me upset it won't be around when I'm old enough to collect.

I'm old enough to have two defined benefit pension plans, so I have put in for some time. But we either whine or figure out a way, right? smile

On the post office, I mailed my mom a b-day card and even though the self-serve receipt said she'd get it on Sat., she got it on Fri. also, I forgot to get forever add'l ounce stamps, they went up 20% so I was planning on getting some...

I wasn't clear

I missed an important point in my original post. When I used the term "checks" I didn't mean literal checks. Our payments are deposited directly into our checking account. This time, for the first time ever, instead of the payments showing up in our checking account on the second Wednesday of the month, they showed up four days earlier.

A slight correction

Here's a slight addition or correction to the schedules you've listed above. My birthday is on the 2nd of the month and my wife's is on the 17th of the month, but we both get our payments on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. For all I know, maybe our bank the mistake of posting the payments on the 9th instead of the 13th this time.

Understood the "checks" part. Showing up is really a function of your banks software. Direct Deposits have to show up at the bank x number of days to allow fo them to process them. Some bank choose to show pending deposits, transfers, etc., others don't. The payment has always been there several days before, they jsut weren't being shown.by your bank.

My Social Security direct deposit has always shown up in my account on the Tuesday evening before the 2nd Wednesday of the month. Nothing in my checking account yet for this month.

Mine has been showing since Friday, for the 7/12 deposit. Maybe sooner. Friday was the first day I noticed it,

My SSA check always…

…shows pending on Tuesday evening as does my wife’s. Sometimes it doesn’t show up as being credited to the account until sometime on Thursday. Conversely, I receive two checks from my IRA. The are withdrawn on the 15th but I will get one usually on the 16th and the other one on the 17th or 18th. Interesting! It has been that way for the last 5 or 6 years.

That's called "float". The money is in the bank, but the bank is holding your funds for a period of time that they don't have to pay you interest on it. They get to use your funds for free.

In this day-and-age, all banking in this country is done within 24 hours electronicly, yet if you deposit a check from "joe" drawn on his checking account at another local bank, your bank puts a hold on it for a number of days which varies for different banks. Again they are using your money without actually letting you have it.

Before this month, has your payment EVER showed up early? Mine hasn't. For the past 15 years it has shown up during the early morning hours of the second Wednesday.

No, the actual payment hasn't ever been available before Wednesday morning, that I've noticed. Certainly not on Tuesday evening. I've never really looked to see if it's thee before 8.

One early, one not

Mrs. Anyway's electronically-deposited benefit payment showed up three days early, midweek, at the end of June, and no, that hasn't happened before. My July deposit, which is scheduled to arrive today or at least by Wednesday, has not appeared in the account yet, but at least I can see that it did not come early.

S/S

I have been getting mine on the Friday before the Wednesday it is suppose to arrive on for years.

That's interesting

Up until this very moment, I always thought that SS payments showed up no earlier or later than the Wednesday it was scheduled to arrive. Live and learn I guess.

Essentially true...

Phil

That is essentially true if you have direct deposit. But I can dig deep into my deposits and generally find my SS check about 2-3 days early but marked pending. In my case, should I desire to close that account, the bank would likely tell me to come back in a few days.

See the discussion earlier about "float".

SS checks

We are both getting SS and we get one on the second Tuesday of the month and the other one on the third Tuesday of the month. Only time things change is if it is a holiday then it will be one day early usually. We have never had a hold put on our checking since we started collecting SS. Always has been direct deposit.
