In California, an army of genetically engineered mosquitoes awaits release. Will it backfire?

Oh, now here's a truly scary idea!

Don't get me wrong, I understand the idea and why / how someone could come up with potential ways to address the problem(s). I've not made up my mind as of yet.

But, and I mean this in a rhetorical way, is this the best way to solve this mosquitoe problem or might there be a more practical way? That being said, I'm curious about others thoughts on the topic of releasing "Genetic Modified" mosquitoes into the wild. Is this in reality going to cause a larger problem. Wildlife consume these mosquitos and people consume the wildlife. So it's almost inevitable we have the possibility of being affected by these genetically modified pests.

What are the "natural" preditors of this mosquitoe?? Could introducing more "preditors" be a better way to deal with the issue?

Here's where to send comments.

yikes

Man is NOT smart enough to screw with Mother Nature.
California is just plain Not smart.
So this does not bode well.

law of unintended consequences

It will be interesting to see how this experiment end up and how something unexpected will happen.

Years ago, there was a commercial on TV

I don’t remember the product but the commercial ended something like this; ‘Don’t mess with Mother Nature!’ People think that they have a solution to a problem and guess what; they create a bigger problem. And, with some of the ideas coming out of California, it could be, well, quite interesting!

Bleeding heart do-gooders consistantly fall into this trap ...... Hence the "excuse": Well it's better than doing nothing! ........Sad really!

what will it do to you in 10-20 years

remember J&J baby powder used on baby's for years, now their in court because it causes cancer ! all the Carona vaccines created how will they effect you in later life ? and yes i have got mine and the booster ! Measels shots now they tell you causes shingles latter in life so now you have to get a shot for that ! what scares me more is the experiment with genetics change this change that now what did that create ?

Natural preditorz are better

What are the "natural" preditors of this mosquitoe?? Could introducing more "preditors" be a better way to deal with the issue?

Choice Between Biting Mosquitoes or Rabid Bats

At least one predator of mosquitoes, if my memory serves me, are bats. Bats fly around using their innate sonar to locate mosquitoes with sound waves.

It comes down to a choice between rabid bats or biting mosquitoes.

If I'm not mistaken, swallows also eat mosquito, the best way to curb the population of mosquito is minimize standing water

Another potential genetic mistake

You can almost be assured that this will be disastrous in the long run.
