C330 HD size

I read on another forum that the new CNNT 2008 is quite a bit larger than V8, and on a Nuvi a user had to remove several custom files to make it fit. It was also noted that on the 330 it jsut barely fit.

Is there a diagnostic or other screen that will show the size of the HD on the 330, or the available space?

330

try the diagnostic page by pressing the upper right corner of the display for around seven seconds while you are on the menu WHERE TO.
This might give you a start.

Map size

There is a problem with the size of the map and some of the units. Some of the Nuvi 6XX models do not have enough space to put the map and any of the accesories on them.

The C 330 does not have room for the entire mapping. You are limited by size, and trust me, the maps aren't getting any smaller. The C 330 was destined to be discontinued, but it is one of the best selling units we make. I'm afraid it is going to become more "regional", like the continental US, or that type of thing.

Maybe a dumb question

On the C330, this may be a dumb question, but is it possible to load the USA, later if planning a trip to Canada, load that, and upon return, reload USA data? Haven't gotten my update yet, so was wondering...

another dumb question

Is the sd card the answer to larger maps on the c330?

If it's there, it's pretty cryptic. I haven't been able to decipher it.

Map Size

Yes, I saw that also, one has to choose between Lower 48, Nothern US/canada and something else that escapes me right now. I don't intend to visit Canada anytime in the near future. Like California, I haven't lost anything there and wouldn't go look for it if I did.

Does the C340 have a larger Drive? I've got a lead on a pretty good deal for one, and would replace the 330 in a heartbeat.

I read in another thread that Garmintech doesn't want to take over the board, nor answer specific questions, so my earlier post will have to be answered either by others who have the update (mine hasn't arrived, yet?) or I'll have to e-mail or call Garmin Tech Support. I do understand his/her point and will abide by those thoughts.

If anyone has the answer in the meantime, please post. Can we load the US 48, later load Canada, then re-load US 48 again? Since we DO travel to Canada and the US. This was one of the reasons we got a unit that had both, if it won't do this, probably won't upgrade to the newer map...

I had a discussion with a Garmin tech support guy today, specially someone from the software department. The solution for those having device that cannot hold the entire maps reside in the possibility to use an SD card to install the part (Canada or lower 48 states) that couldn't fit the device.

I haven't received my update yet, I know it has been shipped, but the delivery to Canada seems to be slower. But the person I spoke to told me to contact them once I will have the device and the update and they will be able to guide me through the process.

If someone already have the DVD and would like to try, call garmin support, ask to be transfered to the software support, and they will be able to help.

I will probably call back in few weeks, once I will be back from vacation.

Thank you for the info. on how to find HD system.

I am back from vacation and

I am back from vacation and while I was away, I received my Free DVD update of the 2008 maps. I still haven`t installed them and it is still puzzling me if that would be a good move. I have re-contacted the Technical Support via email to follow-up on what they told me about the possibility to install the part of the map that wouldn`t fit the machine into an SD card, but I haven`t received any feedback yet (Posted 3 days ago).

From what I have read in other posts, it would appear that it wouldn`t be possible to do so.

As of installing only the Canada maps, and if necessary to install the US maps later, I am not that crazy about that idea. If I plan a trip from Montreal to Florida, I would like to have the GPS guiding me from Home, not from some states more at the south. I wish we could select the states/provinces we would like to have, that would have been the best solution for the C330.

I will have to make a decision. I feel like installing the updates will make my GPS less interesting when I will plan a trip to USA.

C330 HD size

after installing the new 2008 maps on my c330 from the computer, the size of the map program that transferred was 3.41 gb.

I was told by Garmin on the phone that the new 2008 maps do not fit on the internal memory of the StreetPilot c330 and that you need to also purchase as SD card in order to load it.

The small size of the memory

The small size of the memory on the C330 was my main reason for returning it. That and the fact that I could not just pop in a 2G card with my POI's on it and have it read from there... sad Other than that I really did like the unit...

I got an interesting reply

I got an interesting reply from garmin technical support. Interesting regarding one aspect that I wasn`t aware about the C330.

My main concern about installing the Canada OR the USA maps into the GPS was how will the GPS help me from home to go to the other region loaded in the GPS. For instance, since I live in the Montreal (Quebec) region, if I am planning a trip to Florida, I will have to load the USA maps. But how will the GPS guide me from Montreal to the place were the USA maps starts?

The answer was that the GPS contains basemaps of Canada/USA. Those basemaps are not detailed maps, but should be enough to guide me from home to at least where the USA maps start.

Here is part of the answer I received:

"your C330 should be able to use the built-in basemap in Canada for your origination and route you via major highways to the US portion. The basemap will not have good street level information and it might not match up perfectly to the detailed maps on the US side."

Anyone else tried them? Anyone in Canada have loaded the USA maps and tried to have the GPS generating a route from Canada to USA? Or someone in USA installed the Canada maps and tried to generate a route from USA, where you are, to Montreal (for instance)?

As for the USA states installed with the Canada region, here is the list I received:

"Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio, Indiana,Illinois, Michigan, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Maine."

thanks,

Pierre

Just a quick update about

Just a quick update about this...

I have been able to install the new maps on my C330. I have first installed the USA maps to see how it would behave and, as mentioned by the tech support, I was able to see basic routes in the Montreal are (where I am currently located), enough to be helped by the GPS to get to USA, where the fulls maps were visible.

I have then installed the Canada maps, and could see Canada roads and POI, and even the USA ones for few states.

Regards,

Pierre

c330 and SD card

I posted in another thread that this indeed works. I did just that. Purchased a card reader/writer and 1gb SD card (512 will also work) from Walmart. Used Garmin Map Install to load all of Canada & Alaska on the SD card. Note: SD card was not in the c330 when I did this. Put SD card in c330 and now have all the maps available. Looked up my friends address in B.C. and now can directly route there, whereas before could not. I'm a happy camper...
