Thank you

Thank you so much for uploading the large jcv file for people who still need it.

What's the difference?

What's the difference and which devices take which file?

The same as the two prior updates, the Garmin devices that use the Large JCV files, both JCV files are used. Since Garmin has moved away from using a single JCV files, as it did for years, many members have had success in using a single files, i.e., D3060380A.JCV. Not all Garmin units are compatible with the Large JCV file. You might want to check CraigW's Post here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/45292

You take your pick, probably D3060380A.JCV if you decide to use a single files, otherwise use both JCV files as provided by the Garmin download.

Using both files

I’m using both files in my 1390T and don’t notice any problems. Must be a reason why Garmin went to 2 files instead of 1.

Thanks for uploading

A Reason?????

One might believe Garmin had a reason to go from one file to two for the Large JCV file folder. Starting with the 2022.10 update, Garmin changed from one to four JCV files. It was shown to be a lot of duplication and overlap with the four JCV files. For the 2022.20 update, Garmin dropped back to two JCV files where it has since remained. Why, I have no idea and I wonder if Garmin knows why? If Garmin had a reason, they never made it public.

Thanks again, mcginkleschmidt...

Once again, your help with the large JCV files has made my update complete.

I have skipped through a 250 mile simulation looking at the Junction Views, and I have let about 20 miles run, stopped, and returned Home to check for the operation of minor Junction Views.

I have had no problem with the multiple, large JCV files on my generously sized card since discussion of the 2022.10 update.

Take care!

As long as both files work, I just keep using them. I couldn't be bothered to test each file to see which one is better (?). I have the large jcv installed on my 16GB microSD card so I have lots of room anyways. Thanks again for uploading the file to us who still need it. We all really appreciate it.

Does all Garmin GPS's have

Does all Garmin GPS's have these files?
Are you updated normally with Garmin Express or ?
I have a Garmin RV 770 and never done this before so I have to ask.
Thank you

Check CraigW's Thread

A quick Google search of Garmin RV 770 shows it uses the split-screen view so it is likely you will derive little to no benefit from using the full-screen Large JCV file, even it the file will function on your Garmin RV 770.

According to a very informative thread posted by CraigW, split-screen users preferred to stick with the split-screen view. For more information you would do well to check out CraigW's thread here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/45292

Thanks!

for the files.

Thank you mcginkleschmidt...

downloaded and working fine. smile

I looked at that link

I looked at that link explaining the 2 different JCV files. I have a nuvi 1450 and it does not automatically download the large JCV. I always have to download and copy it manually.

Normally I just copy the one (in this case D3060380A.JCV) file and that seems to work, but now I read that I may "need" the D1279460A.JCV as well???

What does the second file have that the first one does not? I didn't see anything that really explained the differences in each file.

Thanks

Multiple Large JCV Files...

There has been as many as three large JCVs at a time. They don't seem to be in conflict, and Garmin has not offered any explanation that I have seen.

As long as I have room on my card, and no one discourages the practice, I use all of them.

My theory ...

My theory is that the different files are for different download options such as Full NA vs "Lower 49". Why Garmin would download a JCV for the map version other than the one you downloaded is beyond me, but that is what I think they are doing.

For my nuvi 755 and my nuvi 855, I am installing the Full NA map and only using the largest JCV file (D3060380A.JCV). On my test routes, I seem to be getting all the same junction views that always I got before Garmin started downloading the multiple files, so there doesn't seem to be anything missing.

I don't think there is any harm in having the multiple JCV files installed on your SD card, but I think the device is only loading up and using one of them.

From the thread Large JCV File Download Link For 2022.10 Map (Edited)(http://www.poi-factory.com/node/51263) Garmin is quoted saying: “As more information keeps getting added to the mapping, the files are going to continue to grow in size. The JCV files show images of major highways, exits, and merge lanes upcoming on a route. We continue to add more and more of these images to our updates and they are split up into regions to help make the device faster. It doesn't have to read the entire 2.6GB file to get the image it needs when they are broken up into several files. There is nothing wrong with the update, this is just part of increasing the abilities of navigation units.” I looked back for three or four years and the JCV file size on my nüvi 3597 has remained relatively constant near 510MB. So it seems implausible that the Large JVC is growing in size, while on a much newer unit there has been essentially no growth. The most logical conclusion is that the different files are for maps with different coverage. The Large JCV file on the nüvi 855 seems to contain many many more junctions than the JCV file on my nüvi 3597 (six vs. two on a 20mi test run).

Any way to force Garmin Express to get the *small* JCV?

I have the opposite problem - I am trying to get the small JCV to use on my 765 and still have enough space for a couple custom maps I have.

Would anyone know if there a way to force Garmin Express to deliver the small JCV file or have a link to get it?

My guesses

I doubt that there's any way that Garmin's software would work.

You could try to find someone with a Garmin GPS that gets the small JCV file and have them send the file to you. Then disabling or removing the Large JCV file from your nuvi 765 and installing the small JCV file in the same folder, followed by a reboot of the GPS, and finally a drive with a route or simulated route on highways that should have JVs will let you know if the file works.

I have no prediction of the results but if you do it, I anxiously await reading what you found. Be sure to keep a copy of the map's current Large JCV file on a computer or some other backup and also keep in mind that with each map update, you will need to repeat the process since JCV files only work with the map version downloaded and installed at the same time. Even if the small JCV file works for you, I doubt that it guarantees that future map updates will also be able to use a small file.

Good luck.

Request for small JCV

Thanks - I gave it one more shot by moving the large JCV file to my PC and deleting it from the Nuvi, then progressively filling the Nuvi with extra files to take up the free space to the point where it would no longer be possible for the 765 accept the 800MB file (so be forced to download the 25MB file). I then deleted the map file and used Garmin Express to re-install it. That approach didn't work. It just made me choose a smaller portion of the map, but still downloaded the large JCV. Anyone still got the small JCV file around?

OK

Gst,

OK, I've got the file. Just to be sure, it's the tiny jcv file that came as part of the City Navigator NA (Lower 49 states) map update version 2023.10 that was installed to my nuvi 855 on February 2, 2022. The file is D3153380A.jcv and is about 25.3 MB in size.

Your gst account here at the Factory doesn't have a Contact link so I can't contact you. But you should be able to view my account here by clicking on my CraigW above the Subject line, then click the Contact tab in my account and send me an email with your email address. I'll send you a link to the file from my Microsoft OneDrive account and you should be able to download and save it.

Good luck and please report back with your result since you will likely be the first person to try to use the tiny jcv file that was offered only during map updates to these models: nuvi 8x5, 1390, and 14xx. It'll be interesting to see if the file will work with a nuvi 765.

If this doesn't work or if it works but you realize how few JVs are offered and want to go back to the Large JCV file, can you use a larger SD card to hold your extra Custom maps, City Navigator NA, and the large JCV file? I know you said your SD card couldn't accept the Large JCV file since the card also contained a couple custom maps in addition to City Navigator NA, but I think your nuvi 765 can use SD cards up to 32GB in size. Correct me, if I'm wrong, someone! What capacity SD card are you using now?

Smaller JCV worked!

Thanks CraigW! Installed and tested it against the larger JCV file on a simulated cross-country route.

Sure enough, the smaller JCV correctly displayed the Lane Assist at some of the same junctions along the way that the larger JCV had displayed.

Thanks

Thanks for letting us know. I have updated my Large JCV File FAQ to include this finding. cool
