Nice guys finish last

Title certainly fits.
We went to visit our Nieces and Nephews 10 days ago. Haven't made that trip for 2 years now because of Covid. Normally we do this right after Christmas. Not far, only about a 12 hr. drive from where we live. Quite a bit longer this time because of winter conditions and highway closures. No matter. We took the car instead of the Truck this time. Car is new so we decided to test drive it through -30 and icy roads and blizzards on the way up and on the way back. Worked well. The day we left the Truck got plugged into the trickle charger, wouldn't survive two weeks sitting with the Alarm active. The last time i forgot to start the truck after a month the batteries were completely dead and not salvageable and i had to take a trip to the dealer after replacing the Batteries because the remote door lock fob and the remote start fob wouldn't work. Couldn't program them either. Dealer said it had something to do with residual memory not being in the system. 60 bucks later all was good. We get a lot of wind here. 40-60 mph not unheard of. Those winds like to set off my alarm. Normally i don't care if I'm home, but i'm gone for two weeks and didn't want the neighbors complaining. So i didn't lock the drivers door, which then would also not activate the alarm. What could go wrong? No one gets stuff stolen in the neighborhood. Blah....come back, look in the truck and stuff all over the seat. Bugger..they stole the GPS and i think a calculator. New GPS coming, alarm stays gets activated from now on regardless and maybe the Gps gets put on the floor instead of the dash when not in use.

sorry

Sorry to hear that, Speed2. It is surprising that there would be any crime in your town.

lol

Oh there's crime, just not in my neighborhood...until now.

The next time

I would talk to the neighbor about the alarm and that you are away. I am sure they would watch the house and truck and wouldn't care a hoot about the alarm.

sorry to hear

Sometimes I guess it takes being a victim of a crime to change one's outlook and habits. Sometimes when someone lives in a metropolitan area, they've been mugged multiple times and likely had fist fights defending themselves from criminals. imho that can't happen to a person and not have them change their outlook.

My mom living in CT still leaves a key under the door mat. I've argued with her over the years and probably gave up 20 years ago on the topic. Neighbor across the street was robbed blind, she still does the same thing.

My in laws in norther NJ metro NYC leave their house unlocked even when they are away for days. Reasoning is nothing ever happened since 1988. People here are of means, they don't need to steal. OK lol

Do nice guys finish last? When I was growing up, I was told they don't, they were never in a race to begin with. Ah, the stuff we're told when we're kids!

When I saw that Times Square victim I thought to myself, I got into a 4:1 fist fight at the same station in 2007, and let me tell you, the New Yorkers watched, did not assist me. The MTA conductor watched, doors of the train remained open, and train did not leave until the altercation finished. Thinking that I was gonna be lectured by detectives actually it was the opposite, they said good for you for standing up. Sooner or later those actors will enter the criminal justice system.

Moral of the story at least for me, is to do avoid trouble, and learn lessons. Society is still evolving.

Nobody saw a thing

In the end i guess it could have been be worse. There was no damage done to the Truck. Not sure if they would have broken a window to get in. I got away with spending under 300 to replace the unit and Dash Mat

be interesting

to know if insurance covers that. My hunch is no, the vehicle was left unlocked.

Anyway when I was in HS, my town had the first murder in over 300 years, since the town was founded.

Have to remember the times. People routinely hitchhiked, including women. I did--not across the country, but to Miami FLA, and back.

Google that town and "murder," today, and pages come up filled with incidents.

If anyone knows what changed, let me know. I prefer the way it was, but then again, who doesn't.

Another point I was trying to make, would securing one's belongings, make a person not a nice person? Or maybe it's just a habit that should be adapted for the current times. I do get it, my mom won't change nor will our in-laws. And my mom was a victim of crime in the 80's. Somehow she equates changing her habits to "giving in." jmoymmv

Thieves are scum

We never leave anything unlocked. In today's world, there are too many people that think you owe them, so they just take what they want. Its not worth taking a chance unless of course, you don't mind having something stolen.

Unlocked Items

back in the 40's and 50' you could leave your windows down and garage door open. Now if I park a vehicle outside, I roll up the windows and lock the doors. I I go in the house for a while or go in the backyard, I close the garage door. No trust anywhere anytime anymore.

Live & Learn

I grew up in northern NJ where my house and car were robbed & vandalized several times. Learned the hard way to lock up everything. It's one of the reasons I moved to northeastern PA.

I now live in the woods at the end of a 1.25 mile dead end private road. My nearest neighbor is a half mile away and I still lock everything. Old habits are hard to break.

lol

I remember my dad in the 60's leaving an old lawnmower out on the side of the road hoping someone would take it. Two weeks later coming back from holidays someone moved it closer to the ditch.

one deterrent

A friend of mine that lived in a rural area said that a lot of vehicles would enter his driveway (100 ft. long with a loop at the end) at night and make U-turns there. His female partner would worry a lot when he wasn't there - she was wheelchair bound.

He placed a professionally painted sign at the entrance that read " Welcome to Wilson's Snake Sanctuary". That ended the drive throughs!

crazy society

My neighbor always said if you need anything, just go into my shed and get it. We live on 1/5 acre lots and I'd have to hop the fence and go over.

Well he passed away in 2019 and his wife is a widow. The neighbor they have goes into the shed without the offer. One time she said thanks for doing the snow, I don't know what happened to our snowblower, Mark (her son) came over to use it and it wasn't there.

Turns out the neighbor got it out of the the shed and loaded it into his van, and was using it. Bizarre.

My shed locks, but I can't imagine someone going up to it and removing things without asking. But it's reality.

p.s. I've often regretted buying this house in that the road is busy, double yellow line and 35 mph. But my neighbor said there have been no thefts and she can attest to it personally to 1966, when they moved in. Behind us, many. I guess being a busy road and no parking on this side, is inconvenient to steal, seriously. It's a physical inconvenience. whereas behind one could park and not be under pressure as if a delivery person would be for us.
