This should be fun to watch! (GPSD bug rolls back time)

A 2689LMT in both our cars that we love... and a Nuvi 660 with Lifetime Maps that we have had literally forever.... And a 2011 Ford Escape with Nav System that is totally ignored!

Very Interesting!

I found the following explanation for this phenomenon:

"You might not remember what Gpsd is but it is in the news every 19.6 years, or more specifically every 1024 weeks, thanks to lazy timekeeping implementation for GPS satellites, which keep track of the number of weeks since January 5, 1980 as an unsigned 10-bit integer. That means when it hits 1023, the next week it rolls over to 0 and many systems which interface with GPS using timestamps will suddenly have corrupted location data."

Found the above information here: https://pcper.com/2021/10/global-displacement-system-a-gpsd-...

1999 - 2000

I remember the crap then and nothing happened.
I know a guy who got a hunting licence in case he had to shoot his own meat. He considered buying a motorhome too!He stocked up the basement with food and water He bought gold in case banks were closed.

Well 2000 came and nothing happened!

Nuvi 350 long gone, Nuvi 855LMT, Nuvi 2797LMT, DriveSmart 50 LMT-HD, 3790LMT now my daughters. Using Windows 10. DashCam A108C with GPS.

What could happen....

and what happens with all the drama and hype taken out....This will in all likelihood be a nothing event. Looking at all the groups and companies that rely on GPS they will have a tested and re-tested the fix to this when 2023 comes around. But this will be hyped and used to sell a lot of books and products.

Y2K was a success story.

Y2K was a success story. There was an awful lot of toil and money spent over some years. That is the reason very little went wrong.

Ouch!

That sounds painful.

Day of Reckoning

If I understand this correctly, the event for the unprepared is supposed to occur tomorrow, October 24, 2021. The next ‘week 0’ is not scheduled again until Saturday, November 20, 2038, another 19.6 years (1024 weeks) down the road.

Funny!!!!

"No misfortune is so bad that whining about it won't make it worse."

except it isn't stored that way

I thought the gps algorith mwas corrected . . no longer count the number of weeks since time(0),
instead counts the number of weeks since the most recent week(0)
all that is required is that both transmitting and receiving units record the same time() within a specified margin of error which is then corrected to the atomic clock
It is no more of a big deal than the "millenium bug" which incidentally doesn't arrive till 11:10am 16 November 2115, 4 byte calendar = 2^32 seconds = 135 + years

I'll probably miss that

If only ..

Really worried about it. Got more important stuff to worry about, such as if I am going to win the lottery, (which I never play). Oh my, that’s another worry. rolleyes
