my 660 finally failed

My 660 finally failed after 13+ years!

Got half of the 2022.20 map into the 660 and went to install the other half and MapInstall didn't recognize it anymore.

Did a Master Reset and installed the latest Garmin USB drivers and rebooted PC. To no avail. Neither MapInstall nor GE could find the 660 any more. My 3597 was recognized though.

File Explorer showed two "H" & "I" drives, but couldn't open any of them.

Well, I've had it a long time and it was a backup, but I never needed it as a backup. Farewell old friend, you did well for 82,000+ miles and showing the fastest speed of 457mph (airplane trip to Las Vegas) grin

My 660 rear connection and

My 660 rear connection and traffic receiver/cable dc connection died years ago. But via a homemade cable it powers off USB port now and still is working with latest SE US Map.
Sorry to hear of your loss.

I'm not normally inclined to stick with an older unit when it has reached the end of life. Replacement with a newer unit is usually what I do. Sometimes however, I get attached to a particular model and seek a direct replacement. I've done this with my trusty old 255 and 1490 GPSR's.

If you're interested, there is a used 660 on eBay now for $12 with free shipping:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/304076584060?epid=1922778136&hash=i...

The unit looks to be in pretty good shape and it's a trusted seller.

Sometimes, an old friendship is worth a few bucks wink

THanks

Thanks, but I really don't need a backup GPS. I have never had to use the 660 since I got my 3597. I just kept the maps up to date - just in case.

If the 3597 fails, I'll just buy a new model.

Old 760s

I have two old nüvi 760 units. When the first one quit having sound (unless plugged into the car stereo) I got the second one. Now neither of them makes sound unless plugged in and then it's only out of one speaker. You can sometimes wiggle the cable around and hold it just right so both speakers in the car work but usually not. We still use them and listen to audio books with them while driving.

The original has full maps and the second one only has the US lower 48 and Mexico. I actually almost bought a third one but figured it would suffer the same fate and likely not have lifetime maps on it. There is no way I'd purchase maps for another one of these.

Sad to hear that your GPS finally failed. May it RIP.

Need some help

My 660 quit talking to me. It now just shows that there is a turn ahead in a message on the screen. How do I get Jill to talk to me again.

man

look at the bright side! I joined this forum when I got a 660, and it failed in only 3 years. Yours had a good life.

FM transmitter?

Check to see that you haven't inadvertently turned the FM transmitter on since it mutes the GPS speaker. For that matter, confirm the speaker isn't muted. See p 35 of manual for FM transmitter info:

My 550 is hanging on

On the third screen, can't find the internal battery so it's go through the loading gps position from scratch when turned on. And still playing tunes on my Harley!

As is often the case, CraigW helps another POI Factory member find the right solution to a problem. Thanks Craig!

Oops, you had me scared for a moment, as when I first skimmed thru your reply, I read Craig was the problem. Me paranoid, never.
