Switching from US / North America to Europe

I had some issues the last time I travelled in the EU as I did not have enough data on my phone.

I was wondering if there were any issues in switching a US Garmin to EU?

I believe this is a one time region change.

Have you or anyone you know made the region switch>

Thoughts and input appreciated.

Well

Not sure what you mean by a one time region change? You can install the EU map alongside your NA map, either using the link above or through a map download.

Note if you buy the map on a sd card then the map is locked to the card so only it can be used, and the card can't have other data etc installed to it.

My thoughts

Hermosabeach, I think I should write up a FAQ on this since it comes up often enough. If I get it done soon, I'll let you know here.

I have two suggestions and the priority of one over the other depends upon if the upcoming trip is a final or once-in-a-lifetime trip to Europe from North America, or if you plan to visit and drive in Europe more than once.

Buying the genuine Garmin-made Europe on SD is an option, and is $100 US if buying direct from Garmin. Be sure to check the compatibility of the map with your Garmin device since some older devices can't use it. Besides being an un-updatable option, it's also (I'm pretty sure) missing certain features like Junction Views. To me, this is a pricey choice with limited features that you may expect and be used to having. One way to lessen the cost is to buy a genuine Garmin-made Europe-on-SD card map on eBay. If either buying new or used, once you know you're not returning to Europe, you can offer the SD map on eBay and recoup some of your costs. Note that it's very important (even more than with normal eBay purchases) to buy from a high feedback high reputation Seller and that a Seller with a Return policy is better than one without.

What I think is a better option, possibly cheaper, and what I would choose to do is to leave your North America-mapped GPS at home and buy a new/refurbished/used Garmin device originally supplied with a map of Europe. The slight challenge of buying a European version Garmin GPS from North America is countered by having a full-featured GPS with map of Europe complete with Junction Views and other features, is probably lifetime-updatable with future European map updates, and if buying refurbished/used, may well be cheaper than buying a Europe-on-SD card.

Thanks for the info since I

I have the Europe maps on SD and didn't even take the GPS on our last trip.
After we checked in at our hotel we asked where the closest cell phone shop was. It was within walking distance. We went there and told them we were going to be in Europe for 2 weeks. They sold us a plan for $17 with unlimited data plan for the two weeks. It was great. All our google maps were there and we could text anywhere, we were only able to call in Europe. They gave us the option of calling in Europe or to the US. We even logged in to our security cameral to check on our home.
I logged into Google Maps and all my places I had saved before we left for the trip were there. We had everything we needed. When needing anything the search was there for eating and shopping.
Saying all that we never drove anywhere. We walked and were on a tour bus. We also were on a cruise and the maps worked on the water to see where we were and text the kids.
I looked before we left and we could buy a SMS card in the US but it was $50. I researched and saw it was cheaper to wait until we arrived in Greece to buy our SMS card
