I think a battery died in our GPS!

we have 2x 2689LMT's, and one (in Wife's Car) I believe the battery died....

I changed battery in our old 660... Was a bit intense, but we were successful....

Is the battery in 2689LMT as easy or easier to swap ?????

May look into that before trip later this year....

Thanks for info!

As it turns out... Same company that I used for 660 has a kit... and a video which indicates that 2689LMT is easier to swap battery than 660 was...
Price nice, but shipping appeared to be free until I ordered... when a $9 shipping charge suddenly appeared... That should not be... but if it's as issue free as my 660 was, it is a one time issue...

It is interesting

No trips

This lockdown has been a crimp on road trips, checked my two 2797s and batteries flat. Charged them up via USB wall wart and they came back to life. I guess I will have to take them out for a run every couple of weeks to keep the batteries up to scratch.

Make sure the device is truly off

I have a couple of old 265’s and a 2689. One thing different in the two generations is that the older models like the 265, when turned off, are off, and they can sit that way for several months. In contrast the 2689, a quick push of the button puts it into standby and two weeks later it will be dead. Do this a few times and the batteries will be shot. You have to hold the button in for maybe 10 seconds, then you are given the choice to turn it off. Being truly off helps the longevity of any rechargeable battery.

where to get battery?

Nice story. I wonder where did you buy your battery? I did buy from Ebay then it kills my GPS. After just several weeks under the heat of summer, the batter was bigger in size and exploded, then the GPS couldn't start on since then. Tks

I've only replaced one battery and it was several years ago but I had great luck with this site for battery + tools:

NewPower

I haven't had to replace a GPS battery, but I have used NewPower for several tablet batteries with good results. Good instructions and special tools, if needed, are included.

The link below will show you the 2689 offering. I do suggest you buy direct from the importer, in this case NewPower, as opposed to getting something off eBay. The insures you don't get counterfeit or old stock.

I got it from NewPower 99

I got it from NewPower 99

The website shows $00 for shipping, making you think Shipping is Free, until you enter in payment info.... Then it pops up with $9 as only option, and your Payment information is already accepted... I don't recall this happening years ago as we used same company for the 660 battery replacement.... I would have thought a Postage Pop-Up before you enter Payment info would be the nicer thing to do...

The Battery failure was not over time... it was immediate...
We actually had to make an emergency trip to Chicagoland a few months back, and battery was fine then... and we use it for local trips as well....

About 3 weeks ago, any time GPS was plugged in, It booted from Garmin Screen... even if power off & on was immediate... So we left it plugged in but powered off for a few local trips of 2-3 hours or so, with 15 min stops....
That resulted in Battery LOW prompts immediately when power was removed... and within 30 seconds it shuts down... Further charging was not helping battery life.

That's what our 660 did eons ago.. and new battery fixed it... and is still healthy today!! SO I do have good things to say about NewPower99 batteries.... over time!!! And I do appreciate the battery replacement Videos!!!

It's on it's way here....

No where is shipping stated to be free

You are somewhat correct that the website shows "Shipping and Handling $0.00 BUT on that screen it also clearly states "Choose your shipping method" and when you do that $8.94 is added for USPS First Class.

So, I really can't find fault with NewPower99! They aren't offering free shipping, it is just shown as $0.00 until a shipping method is selected.

Quoting from their Help page, it states as follows

Quote:

How much is my shipping?

Shipping is automatically calculated prior to submitting your payment information. Simply add items to your cart and proceed to the Checkout page where you will be offered Shipping Method choices and their prices.

I won’t argue with you, but even Amazon doesn’t offer shipping options and their associated cost, until checkout.

660 was my first gps and it only lasted 3 years. Threw it out, it was the screen. the 2nd one has been working fine since 2011...good luck with the fix.

I think ours is a 2350LMT, I think it's good to keep a LMT because I thought they said new ones are subscription based or something, dunno as I don't plan on replacing if anything were to happen, use the phone nowadays

$.02

It is NOT added after payment is accepted UNLESS YOU FAIL TO SELECT A SHIPPING METHOD and then it defaults to the USPS minimum amount, just short of $9. When you add an item to your cart, the next screen CLEARLY is a screen to calculate the shipping charge. It states "Calculate Shipping Rates" and asks you to select country, then state and add zip code. Then you are given the option of USPS at $8.94 and UPS at $18.12. Then you can proceed to checkout and you are again asked to select a shipping method. But if the buyer does not indicate a shipping method, then the minimum amount is added. Also, at this screen, which has billing and shipping address, the state tax if any is applied.

In summary, absolutely nowhere is shipping mentioned as free; it appears as $0.00 until you select the shipping method. If you fail to select a shipping method an appropriate (and the minimum charge) is added.

Worth The $$ ?

I have quite a collection of older GPSR's, several of which have dead batteries. I replaced a couple over the years but the units work fine on vehicle power even with the bad battery. Since I rarely use these units outside a vehicle, I decided not to spend the $$.

Should the need arise, I can always replace a battery in the future.

That's how it is on my end too (Brave browser, Windows 10). No where does the site indicate any sort of "free" shipping like other websites do, often prominently. Seems fairly obvious to me (YMMV) that since there is no option for free shipping in the calculate shipping section that there isn't free shipping. (Shrugs)

Not as nice as 660 kit

New battery for 2689LMT Installed, with a slight hiccough:
Stock battery was 800mAh
650 is 1000
263 is 1500

Still don’t understand why they sent two different batteries?

I used the 650 battery. 263 might have fit but didn’t
Try it.

My main complaint: The provided T4 driver was too loose in the screw head and immediately stripped Star parts out on first screw I tried. I then used a T6 bit to extract the stripped headed screw.
The tip of the supplied T4 is tapered which negates it from being a true T4, and I didn’t catch that.
I carefully ground down the tip of tapered driver, as the bit is tapered, to make it thicker...
Maybe 1/8”, and that was a better fit.

I will save the 263 battery for __________... ?

Booted up w/o SD card. Fine. In car with SD card, OK. display defaulted to 40% brightness.

Your message is a bit cryptic

Your message is a bit cryptic as to what you were installing and where? The 2689 battery at NewPower99 is shown as 1100 mAh.

I was replacing battery in

I was replacing battery in 2689LMT as stated...

My biggest complaint is the T4 they sent... It is tapered and it damaged the first screw it was used on....

Being tapered, it doesn't fit the intended star screw head correctly and stripped it...

Only by carefully grinding the tip of the tool did the taper of the supplied driver finally match the remaining 3 screw heads.. The first one was removed with a T6 driver, as the size of the star head was stripped by the tapered driver supplied, not knowing yet that it was tapered and not the correct size...

the removed battery (700mAh (Not 800mAh as posted before), Garmin Part #361-0056-01 was replaced with the 650 Battery of same physical size... I'll save the other battery for some other project...
