Contacted Garmin via eamil on Monday regarding 2008 map update. Received reply from Cody on Wed who asked for a copy of my receipt. Emailed it and Cody said the update will be sent free of charge by the end of July.
Garmin always coming through as usual..
That is great to know, just got a nuvi 350 today.
I noticed that you have changed models. Guess you wanted a new toy?
My my, aren't you the observant one!!!! yeah, got one today. The other one was messing up, the maps weren't redrawing very well. I like this one, but I like the volume better on the 530.
I got this one because I didn't want to send in the old one in for 2 weeks. I was able to return it and exchange it for this one.
you were able to return the c530 and get another model? How? Was you c530 not that old?...please....do tell..
Yes, it was old, but Walmart will return anything and that is what I did, returned it and upgraded. That is why I love Walmart.
Who at Garmin did you contact? It would be nice to get the upgrade. I probably also need to call though as I have a few nits with the Zumo mount...
So here's my situation below. Looks like I'll try to get on the phone and be on hold for 30 minutes and try to get the update that way...
Thank you for contacting Garmin International, I would be happy to send you the update at no charge if the unit was bought after June 1st (2007). I checked and saw that you bought the unit at the beginning of the year and unfortunately that wont fall under the guidelines to receive an update for free. You will have to purchase the update for a fee of $70.00.

When I first called Garmin about the update the response was that I'd have to pay for it. After politely pointing out that I'd only had the unit (nuvi 350) for a month, the Garmin rep relented and sent it out free; the dvd arrived yesterday.
I installed it (get ready for about an hour's worth of doing something else while the setup program runs) and honestly haven't seen much of a difference from v8 to v9 (aka 2008).
Has anyone installed the update and seen significant changes?
My waypoints are showing up and not just the picture. Under the waypoint icon that appears, it also shows the name of the waypoint which I didnt have before. My maps have better color quality and what I really love is that the orange line (local driving) that is my road of travel shows the next intersection coming up earlier than before with the name in the map along with the driving directons that display at the top of the screen so there is no chance of me missing my turn or guessing that this is my turn coming up.
Does that offer still hold? I bought my garmin a week ago, and if I can get the updated mapping software for free, that'd be great.
No free updates if purchased after June 1!
This is not always the case. I got my nuvi350 in January of 2007 and I received a FREE 2008 map update. As I posted in other threads, don't give up. What have you got to lose? Keep trying ... the next representative just may give it to you.
Yes, but right after that, in the text he quoted from Garmin, it says that you can only get the updates if you purchased AFTER June 1st.
Like I said, "that's not always the case". As indicated in several threads (on this site) relating to the 2008 update, it's obvious the reps have some leeway. I was told several times I couldn't get it free. Then I got ahold of the 'good guy' and he said he'd send it out free of charge. If you'd rather not try, don't. What have you got to lose?
I just bought a Garmin C550 . I am not sure I have the lattest map because (live in Charlottle) it was missing the US National white water rafting center in its library.
press the wrench > map > map info
If you see "City Navigator North America NT 2008"
You have the most current version.
Well I contacted Garmin by email and apparently you can get the new maps if you've purchased recently (apparently post-June 1st). Here's the response.
Thank you for contacting Garmin International!
I would be glad to help you. In response to your email since you just
registered the GPS unit you will be able to get the update free of
charge this time only. Any updates in the future will be a fee. You
will receive the update DVD in 3 to 4 weeks. Thanks again for the email
and have a great week.
