What Android Tablets Or Smartphones Should I Consider To Mount In My Vehicle?

A year ago I made a post when I was looking for a tablet. I still haven't bought one for my vehicle. However, now that Droid Star is available for Android devices, I am rekindling my interest in a tablet or a smartphone for my pickup truck. Since Droid Star runs on Android, I can rule out any Apple iPads.

So, now that I am focusing on Android tablets or smartphones, I will definitely want one with built-in GPS and Bluetooth. One that has a custom fit mount would be my preference.

Shall I focus exclusively on Samsung? Getting one that is ruggedized may be a worthwhile consideration, too. Size wise, I could go with a bigger smartphone or a smaller tablet. I am thinking maybe a 7 inch tablet or whatever phones/phablets are close to that size.

better late than never

at work we use Zebras that run Android Enterprise.

Another piece of the puzzle is that they are managed devices.

I'm not sold on Samsung--I was anti apple for so many years and so I had 3 gens of Galaxy phones. When I think back on the quality etc., I think the main reason for getting them was saying Apple is not possible. yet why did I bang my head against the wall when they all had mfg defects that needed repair under warranty (Verizon sent refurbs).

At least for mounting, I can suggest Proclip. I don't like to endorse products but am willing to share if I've had a good experience with a product and co. Whatever tablet you choose, I think it pays to protect it and mount it properly.

I can’t help with a tablet recommendation

I can’t help with a tablet recommendation.

I hope that you have reason to believe that DruidStar is a viable project. The documentation (e.g. http://www.dudetronics.com/index.php/about , http://www.dudetronics.com/index.php/droidstar , https://github.com/nostar/YSFClients …) is minimalist at best.

I find the statement “ It optionally sends System Fusion GPS information to aprs.fi. “ very attractive but I jump to the conclusion without facts that it is by internet, not radio. Come to think of it, does DroidStar do anything by radio? I didn’t notice an interface but I didn’t look carefully.

If I understand correctly I’m not interested in this project for myself, but am interested in what your experiences are.

No to Samsung

As much as I think the Samsung offerings are better tablets I would not recommend one without checking blogs about updates. Several years ago I dropped quite a bit of cash on a 10+ inch Samsung and after one update to the O/S it was no longer eligible for updates. Updates were available in Europe for the same model for several more years. A few years after that I purchased an Apple product. Apple is considerably better on update availability. My wife’s 8 year old Air still gets updates although we only use it for connecting Sirius/XM to our home stereo using Bluetooth.

Samsung a couple of years

Samsung a couple of years ago only supported a device for 2 years. I believe they changed that from the blow back they got from very expensive flagship phones only being supported for 2 years. Google phones has always supported a phone for 3 years, I prefer buying google phones as thee is no guarantee that Samsung will go back to 2 years once the dust settles.

I beleive..

The general support these days is limited to to software release updates.

So if the device is initially released with version 11.0, its last support will be when version 14.0 is released.

Another way of saying this is,

Support from
11.0 - 13.9999999999999 but not 14.0

But then again but, what the hell do I know?

Never argue with a pig. It makes you look foolish and it anoys the hell out of the pig!

because

I am returning to work in the office, and I am required to do 24/7 support on video to include while driving, I got a $17 and change mount from amazon called iOttie 5. I tested it on Sat. and it works very well with an iPhone, really.

It's not along the caliber of Proclip, but I'm not looking to spend a ton either, it's not like I am a cop. Very odd to me is there is some permanent sticky glue on the suction cup so it really sticks.
