We are happy to report that many of the systems and services affected by the recent outage, including Garmin Connect, are returning to operation. Garmin Forums is still being recovered. We’d like to thank all of our customers for your patience and understanding:
When I tried to launch Garmin Express to find out which version I had installed, I was forced to update to 7.0.2.0 (I previously had 7.0.1.0 installed).
A message box titled "Update Required" popped up, saying "A new version of Garmin Express (7.0.2.0) is ready to install. The new version contains critical updates." There was only a blue button saying "Install Now", no other choices...
Still too scared to update Garmin Express. There was a reported issue a while ago, that interfered with some aspect of the map update for people with older GPS's that needed to update maps using Mapinstall. Not sure if it ever got fixed.
My case is a Zumo 550, updating using Mapinstall to the SD card.
Revisiting this now as I'm getting a "Can't unlock maps" error, and of course the Garmin solution is to update Garmin Express. There is someone with the exact same error and configuration on Garmin Forums, hopefully that will be restored soon.
I wouldn't download anything from Garmin for a while. Who knows what the ransomer's injected into the programs. I won't take a chance on malware.
1. What you suggest may be true.
2. Garmin has taken appropriate measure that users of their products are not affected by downloads. Can you image the impact of hundreds/thousands/millions of reports of malware issues due to Garmin downloads. Garmin for all essential purposes might as well close up!
I’m banking on #2.. The GE works fine and I’m looking forward to a map update.
