Problems Updating Drive 6 GPS

I have been attempting to update my "new" Drive 6 all afternoon. (Uggh!)

I FINALLY got mt Garmin Express to find my GPS and it said must download new software FIRST.

I did so, and after a few minutes, it instructed me to unplug my GPS for 5 second, and then plug it back in to allow the unit to install the new software.

I did so and after waiting 10min (It said it may take a few minutes) the unit did not do anything, nor did the computer screen show progress (nothing changed).

I again unplugged the GPS and the unit stared up showing the Garmin logo and below it 2 lines:
1) "Installing update files"
2) "This may take a few minutes"

Above both lines is a spinning process circle, but even after 15 minutes nothing happens except the battery is running down.

Drive update.

Garmin does not make a Drive 6 model. There is a Drive 60 which came out in 2016, and a Drive 61 which came out in 2017.

In any case, if you want to give it more time in the update step without running the risk of the battery going dead, you could plug it into the power plug in the car. That will keep it in normal operating mode where it can process the update rather than going into mass storage mode or MTP mode like it does when you plug into a computer.

Usually though software updates don't take that long, so there may be something amiss. Since it is a new device, it should be under Garmin warranty. Your best bet would be to contact Garmin Support by phone on Monday (they don't operate phone support on the weekend). I wouldn't bother with using the email support. You will get better service with the phone support.

@bobinyelm

Since you state it’s for your “new" Drive 6”, Alan is correct in saying there is no Drive 6.
Even in your profile, it indicates it as a Drive 6.
Perhaps it can be a Drive 60 (1/2016).Drive 61 (1/2017), Drivesmart 61 (3/2017), or a Drivesmart 65 (1/2019).

Take a look at the below list to help us understand exactly what unit you have and where it was purchased. Please charge the units before you make any software updates as Alan has mentioned.

Shouldn't GE identify the unit?

Since the OP has been able to connect to Garmin Express, shouldn't it identify the device?

You guys should do a Google

You guys should do a Google search on GARMIN DRIVE 6 and see how the unit is advertised in lots of places.

I never get lost, but I do explore new territory every now and then.

Interesting point...

Interesting point; Amazon shows a unit called "Garmin Drive 6LM EX" that after scrolling down shows a model number of 010-01533-0E. However, the Garmin Drive 60 is model number 010-01533-07. There seem to be subtle differences (if you trust the Amazon site) as compared to the Drive 60. One difference I see is the Drive 6 LM is US maps only.

I see them advertised at Walmart and Amazon. However, a search at Garmin foe Garmin Drive 6LM EX, or even just Drive 6, returns nothing. Guessing from the reviews at Amazon, It's an item released in the spring or summer of 2019.

Whatever. The suggestions posted upthread will still work for it. The software remains pretty much the same across all the models with the same name. Drive, DriveSmart, etc.

The OP needs to understand the the Mapinstall program he's trying to use is obsolete, and not supported.

That's a new one on me!

I follow Garmin automotive products pretty closely, and Drive 6 is a new one on me … live and learn! It sort of reminds me of back in the day of the Garmin nuvi 1xxx series. They introduced the entry level nuvi 1100 to the market mid life in the series as an exclusive for certain retailers and never really announced it as a product. It would be interesting to hear how Garmin Express identifies the Drive 6 product.

@Alan

Searching for the Drive 6LM EX it appears that Garmin has no specifice manual for it or when it was released. If you try to find a manual for it it leads you to Drive 40-50-60.
The latest manual for it is released in Sept 2018 revision B.

We still are not sure if member bobinyelm(OP) has the
Drive 6LM EX, perhaps he (she) will update us.

Drive 6 ... Hmmmm

It makes you wonder if they rebranded some old 2016 Drive 60 inventory to unload it a couple of years after it was discontinued, perhaps as an alternative to reboxing it as refurbished units.

charge the battery

The GPS received a software update in the proper manner, but after a restart it should be done in 2 minutes, not 15.

In my opinion, the weak battery caused the software update to fail. Hopefully, after the battery is fully charged another software update will be successful. If not, it could be bricked and Garmin Support is the only option.

A wall charger is best, but a USB cable connected to the computer will do the job in about 5 hours. Make sure the computer does not go to sleep because the USB port will be turned off.
