iOS 13 can now read SD cards

Old news for Android users but this is new for iOS 13 users. With the iOS 13 update, you can now use the Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader and the FILES app on your device to now read your pictures and videos.

Just picked one up at the Apple store and it works like a charm. Reads the SD card, can play the videos and with a click you can save to your camera roll.

This is a win win for iOS 13 users with a dashcam. My SD Card reader will stay in the car for when it is needed.

I’ve been using a WD

I’ve been using a WD iXpand memory
card for a couple years on my iphone6
and wife’s 8+. Way before 13. It connects
via lightning. ??

It also works on our PC’s

Is this something else new???

A 2689LMT in both our cars that we love... and a Nuvi 660 with Lifetime Maps that we have had literally forever.... And a 2011 Ford Escape with Nav System that is totally ignored!

Is There a New Feature with iOS 13?

I have the Apple 30-Pin adapter that could plug into my iPad 2 or iPhone 4 back in the day and view / copy or backup pictures and videos.

Those devices were only running iOS 7 or something like that, so the ability to do that has been here since then. The kit came with two pieces. One plugged into the 30-Pin iPhone or iPad connector, and was an SD Card Adapter. The other was a 30-Pin to plug into the iOS device, and was a USB adapter, so you could copy or view your photo's and video's to a USB Flash drive.

It is cool that they have it for the Lightning Connector though! I may get one, as I've used the old one a lot through the years.

Partially new

When I got my iPad Pro a few years ago, it could do this if I bought the special adapter from Apple, so the basic capability is not new. However, the iPad as a whole did a relatively poor job of coping with the files that were now available to it - at least IMO.

It looks to me like iOS 13 DOES make it easier for these files to be accessed and used by the apps on my iPad and iPhone, but I am still exploring iOS 13, so I may be in error in this regard.
