2019 vs. 2020

Had a conversation about Garmin maps with someone last night
And I found myself having to explain the ‘out of sync with rest of world’ map version naming system.
Other than sayin “That’s the way they do it......”

Is there a reason we are in 2019 and Garmin is in 2020?

A 2689LMT in both our cars that we love... and a Nuvi 660 with Lifetime Maps that we have had literally forever.... And a 2011 Ford Escape with Nav System that is totally ignored!

Well ...

It's a bit like some tax years, you can be in 2019 but file your return in 2020 so you're in the 2020 tax year. Garmin run that way too smile

--
Where there's a will ... there's a way ... DriveSmart51LMT-S, DriveSmart50LMT-D, Nuvi 2508LMT-D, 1490LMT, 1310, Montana 650T, Etrex 20

Or

you can buy a brand new 2020 car in late summer of 2019!

Marketing Strategy.

I think it is just marketing strategy; an attempt to make it seem like you are getting the "latest and greatest". It is not an effective strategy IMO, but it is what it is.

I think it is beyond explanation

I think it is beyond explanation.

Politicians and Diapers must be changed often for the exact same reason...

I agree - It makes NO

I agree - It makes NO sense.

Most corporations run on a fiscal year not a calendar year.

But soon we will be down to once a year anyway. It doesn't matter because most of us will update the map no matter what it's named.

Very true

I second this explanation!

Hit it on the head

Sounds right to me. Marketing. Never trust the marketing people.

Was thinking the same here too.

Just grateful

I’m just glad they keep updating the maps.

Poor Marketing Strategy

Endemic through the whole publication field. I find it very irritating. I'm already getting stuff with publication dates in August and it's still July.

There is a bit of a negative twist to this. Take the case of some financial publications that carry an "advanced" publication date and the "new alert" for "today" is highly negative of positive. That makes the financial publication (for that date) unreliable and obsolete. Anyway, it is a headache.

Just for what it's worth

Would this thread even exist if Garmin named their file

Good Point

You're probably right on that. I was never a fan of software manufacturers switching from version numbers to years myself.

Mad Magazine

It's like how Mad Magazine used to have the July issue on the news stand in February...

Mad Magazine -- RIP

It was sad to read that Mad Magazine will no longer be published. Weird Al said that magazine was part of the reason he's so weird.

Here is the company that provides the map to Garmin. On the home page there should be a map error reporting tab. Go to that and fill in the information that is incorrect. For something like this it may take them a while to get around to correcting it. Several years ago I reported an incorrectly named state highway. It took them over a year to make the correction.

MAD magazine ...

Irreverent and satirical humor in the midst of political upheaval, division and discord. Seems like we might need MAD magazine now as badly as we did back in its day!

What, me worry?

Thanks, I was going to the Town Hall in Hempstead, NY and wound up in Baldwin.

I like the year versus Code

Easier to understand, but would prefer accurate year. Its marketing like Retail for stupid people, $19.99 is not $20.00, 2020 is as new as it gets, even if its 2020 01 and your in 2020 04.

Here (no pun intented)
