Files tend to grow in size over time. My Nuvi 650 apparently choked on updating to map version 2020.1. I used to be able to get all of the US and Canada between the Nuvi itself and the SD card. With this last map update, I was only able to get the Lower 48 states.
Anyone with a Nuvi 650 have the same problem?
(The inability to load all of the US and Canada between the Nuvi and the SD Card.)
Split manually?
Nuvi 650 can use maps on SD card, can't it? Just do this split manually. Install maps on computer and than use MapInstall software to load lower 48 to device and rest to SD card.
If you can't install on card in device just do install through card reader. How to is below:

This way you will have whole US available. GPS should be able to switch between maps when routing. Just remember about max card size for older device:

file naming.
In addition to the advice given by grzesja, the nuvi 6xx has very restrictive file naming conventions. The map .img files must be in the /Garmin folder on both SD card and internal memory. You can have 2 map files in internal memory, one named gmapprom.img and the second named gmapsupp.img. You may also see a third map file in internal memory, the base map named gmapbmap.img. That should be left where it is in internal memory. On the SD card, the map file must be named gmapsupp.img. Some nuvi models allow a second map file on SD card named gmapsup1.img, but I don't think the 6xx is one that does. I am not sure about that last point though.

The only warning with doing this for the nuvi 6xx series is that no file can exceed 2GB, so the split into two files will need to keep this in mind. On the nuvi 750, the new map is under 3GB so a split into two files under 2GB each is do-able.
It could be that Steve R chose an internal map too small leaving the rest of North America over 2GB for the SD card. The other possibility is that the SD card already contained other files leaving too little room for MapInstall to install the rest of North America.
I expect that all of North America can still be installed to a nuvi 6xx with SD card if the intial installed file to the nuvi is selected to be as large as possible and the SD card (4GB or larger) is empty of files. End of my 2 cents.
Possible New Approach to Loading All of Canada and US

A good clue. Will need to test.
Please note: Prior to this map update I was able to get ALL of Canada and the US by splitting the files between the Nuvi itself and the SD card.
PS: I took a look at Garmin's "Mapinstall" and ran into a cryptic nightmare concerning "unlocking codes". I have lifetime updates for the Nuvi which also makes why an "unlocking codes" would be necessary?
