I decided to update my Garmins to CN NA 2020.10 yesterday. I updated the Garmin DriveLuxe 51 LMT-S first. Then I switched to the Garmin mini USB cable and updated the Nuvi 350, 360 and 500 without a hitch.
When I tried the 3597, Garmin Express showed that an update was available, but would not connect to it. Finally, I uninstalled Garmin Express, re-installed it and let it download while I went to bed.
This morning, when I tried to use it, it seemed to be stuck at Loading Maps. Finally, rebooted and was able to get somewhat back to normal, except that it seemed to be taking a long time to find the satellites.
Eventually I pit it outside, in my pickup truck and let it sit for about 15 minutes. When I returned, it had found satellite signals.
I am just curious if anybody here has had these issues with their 3597? Maybe it is time to send it in to the Garmin mother ship for tune up!
I have two 3597s and both updated to the full North America quickly and without issues. Does your 3597 have the new map now?
I didn't have any issues with it. Seemed to update slick as a whistle. I hooked it up, left the house, and when I came back a couple of hours later, it was done. Fired it up and ran a route simulation and it displayed no problems.
Updated my 3597 smoothly without a hitch. Has been running for a couple of days. No issues.
...Does your 3597 have the new map now?
Yes, it does. I am at a loss as to why the others went so smooth, but the 3597 was such a challenge. I don't think I have ever had that much difficulty with it in the past.
I updated maps on my Drivesmart 61-lmt without any issues then I started map installs on Nuvicam, it was going well then near the end it gave error message that map install failed. But when I rebooted the device and checked the map version, it was showing the new version. I hope the maps were installed properly?
I have had a problem with the 3597 for the last three map updates that also had a software update available. The software update is always done first.
After the software is loaded into the nuvi, Garmin Express is supposed to reboot the nuvi in order to actually install the new software. Without the reboot the software is never installed, and the map update is not completed.
Garmin Express fails to perform the reboot, so I have learned to disconnect the nuvi from the computer and do the reboot manually. Then connect it again and proceed with the map update.
A hard reset was done after this happened last.
Remember that, if you feel that the map has not been installed properly, you can reinstall it again without any problem.
The same thing happened yesterday in updating the map for the DriveLuxe 50, so I manually rebooted that after the software update. After that, a hard reset was done.
The workaround is okay so I am not interested in fixing the basic problem.
on my 2 3597's, old 755t and 855. I am still getting the full NA map in internal storage on the 3597's with about 120 MB free space left. I have 32 GB micro SD cards in both of them, but with the 2020.10 update, the SD cards were not used.
That is a great tip. Thank you!
I see the same problem on both DRIVE 51 units I have. Now I just apply the firmware update first, disconnect the unit, do a full power off and restart, the update will apply, then fully shut the unit down and reconnect to GE. Then continue with the map update.
We should wait until the software has been loaded into the GPS before it is disconnected from the computer. It only takes a minute or two. If it is disconnected while the software download is going on, there is the possibility the GPS could be bricked.
Make a full backup of a working configuration before starting the update. See jgermann's FAQ:
Another idea is to separate the tasks of software update and map update. When Garmin Express prompts you to start both, look for another button like "View Details" that will allow you to only do the software update, so you can manually reboot the GPS afterward.
Map update went completely smoothly. under 30 minutes total. Note that the 3597 was completely up to date in terms of software.
Guess I'm lucky.
I do not up date GE between map updates and sometime pass up map up dates.
1. Update GE without 3597 connected and update.
2, Connect 3597 it does updates and then loads new map.
So far this has worked every time.
Well, this is interesting. I updated Garmin Express to V6.12.0 this evening and it indicated that an update was available for my Nuvi 3597. I connected the mini USB cable and it recognized the 3597 immediately!
