All is well

Downloaded and installed just fine.

Metricman DriveSmart 76 Williamsburg, VA

Updated

Updated DriveSmart 50LMTHD and running well.

Installed just fine

Installed on my Nuvi 2699 and 1390 using GE.

For 2699 installed to device and computer. GE said it would take 3 hours. Finished in 31 minutes.

For 1390 installed to device only. GE said it would take 45 minutes. Finished in 44 minutes.

I'm not complaining when things go faster than predicted.

My (2) DriveSmart 61 - size 6.60GB ... time 3 hours

My (2) Nuvi 2460 - size 5.49GB ... time 3 hours

My Zumo 450 - size 1.28GB ... time 2 hours and 42 minutes

My zumo 550 - size 1.28GB ... time 1 hour 52 minutes

One of the DS61's, updated in about 45 minutes although the app said 3 hours.

One of the 2460's updated in about 35 minutes also said about 3 hours.

No problems.

.

Everything all up to (Garmin) date now. All except the Zumo 550 went fine. The 550 still gives me an error message and the main unit is stuck on 2018.20, had to download entire 2020.10 map to the SD card.

I used to pop out the zumo 665 sd card and just do the update on the laptop. The problem is after loading the sd card back in the zumo and checking the map it shows correctly, but GE always shows the previous map version and is always saying it needs an update. I never found a way for GE to read the actual map version running on the zumo unless it loads it.

Since GE can not find the sd card on my zumo I just load Eastern US and then load the rest of North America with MapUpdater to the sd card. Why MapUpdater knows the card is there but GE doesn't is a mystery. Never really asked any questions about it here because not too many users here have zumo 665s.

All the other Garmins load the map just fine with GE to the sd card.

My Zumo 450 works like your 655. I can load a "portion" of the current map to the unit and the rest to the SD card, has been like that for a long time now.

The 550 used to be the same, but about a year or so ago I can't load anything at all to the unit. When I try it starts out like it's going to take a portion but then I'll get an error message and nothing has been loaded. I use GE to d/l the map to the computer only after the error and then use MapSource to load the entire NA map to the SD card.

When checking mapinfo, the 550 will show the mapset it could not update and the current mapset I put on the SD card. I uncheck the one on the unit and just use the one on the SD card.

On the 550 - It sounds like there could be some portions of an old map or other files that it has lost track of and can't delete to make room for the new map portion. Might be time to open the main unit in Explorer and look for any old files with extensions UNL, IMG, GMA, and GCD to delete. You can also view GarminDevice.xml file to see what the unit thinks is loaded. After viewing the file delete it. After all the deletes and restarting the 550 you can log back in with Explorer and view the new GarminDevice.xml file to see if it sees anything differently.

Also, just curious here, after you load the latest full map to the sd card with MapInstall, confirm it is checked in MapInfo, if you checked it with GE. Does GE show the 550 still needs an update?

I opened GE before plugging in the 550 and it had a 'map update' available, same thing once plugged in. My other newer units all show an update as well, but that is software for a time zone change in Alaska.

I looked at the Garmin device xml file and really couldn't make heads or tails of it. It's date was 3/31/2007 prior to me looking at it today. A very long document and I didn't see a map version number, did see mention of the gmapprom.img but no date.

Here are some shots of what I see, what is safe to delete so I may try update again. In explorer the Garmin drive is in the red. The mention of ZUMO 550 is the SD card.

L: Drive is Full

Yep, your base unit is full looking at 1.jpg. It looks like your last update to the base unit was in 9/7/2012 by the date of the some files in 6.jpg

In 6.jpg there are 4 map files from 2012 that start with gmapprom which are old and useless to you. You can delete them.

With only 2 GB of memory in the base unit you need to delete all unnecessary files on the base unit. As always, backup the L: drive first.

I would check in the GPX folder for an ARCHIVE folder. In the archive folder You may have many old archived xx.GPX files from your trips in there that you can move to your hard drive for safe keeping if you like to review your past travels or just delete them if not.

Check in the POI, VEHICLE and VOICE folders and remove any unused files from there too.

After making some room on the L: drive you should be able to again put a small part of the map on you base unit.

Thanks bear007 for your help and suggestions.

First, I deleted the old files you mentioned and that freed up most of the hard drive.

I then went to look in the GPX Archive folder but the Archive folder was corrupted.

Well, with the free space I tried to update the mapset anyway, but once again it failed.

So now I'm back to the Archive folder. Because it was corrupted I could not open or delete it. I tried a few things I read in cyberland that involved a CMD prompt, they didn't work. Then I found a suggestion to run Windows Scan Disk aka "error checking" on the Zumo hard drive, "L" which found and fixed the corruption. The Archive folder was now gone. Back to GE and an update is avalible.

I now am told about a space limitation and am only offered one portion of the NA maps, Canada and Border States.

All complete I check the map set and I am upto 2020.10.

2020.10

https://i.postimg.cc/XYCq1Hhs/12a.jpg

So I open Google Maps on the PC, scan around the US and Canada, find a few addresses to try, and the Zumo finds them all, success, I am up to date.

I do have one more question though.

On the 550 Zumo itself, as mentioned, only Canada and the US Border states were able to be loaded. On the SD card is the entire 2020.10 NA mapset. When looking at map info it only shows the entire map set. Shouldn't it give me the options of choosing the Zumo Canada & Border states, the SD card of all, or both?

On my Zumo 450, I was only able to load Canada and Border states as well, I then loaded ONLY what wasn't loaded on the 450 hard drive to the SD card. The 450's "mapInfo" looks like this:

450 mapinfo

That was a nice job cleaning that drive up. It's been needing that TLC for awhile.

On the 550 I think it only shows 1 line under the 2020.10 heading because you selected the entire map for the SD card, so no sense in repeating map territories on a 2nd line.

On the 450 the 2nd line is showing territories not already included on the 1st line. My zumo 665 Also displays 2 lines since I only added the territories not on the main unit.

One question for you. Since you live in Philadelphia, why didn't you click on the Canada and Border States drop-down box and select Northeastern US States? It pretty much covers from Minnesota down to Mississippi and everything east of that. Just Curious.

I wouldn't worry about the archive folder. The unit will recreate it when it needs it.

Again, great job recovering that drive space!

Canada and border states was the only option, nothing in the drop down, for both the 450 & 550.

Until a few updates ago I used to be able to choose Eastern US, I'd then put the rest on the card. Not any more, although Canada and border states is larger in area, it's smaller in the amount of street info and I'm guessing takes less data to build.

Before the 'fix' the last update the 550 took was 2018.30, that was only a portion, probably the eastern US. Every update since I have downloaded the entire US onto the card, once trying the unit fails. When I was done there would be two choices with a check box, 2018.30 plus whatever, in this case 2020.10. I was able to choose one or both.

I'm guessing since the current setup both portions are from the same set, 2020.10, the 450 has the 2 lines but no choice of one or the other. This still leaves me wondering why the 550 doesn't show either a choice or 2 lines since the card and unit both got maps.

Anyway, thanks again for the help, I'm happy the 550 is back to normal, enjoy your day, unless you made other plans.

The different mapsets (2019.10, 2018.30, etc.) Will be selectable. If you were to put part of a map on the 550 and the rest on the SD card it would show 2 lines under 2019.10 for the 2 different locations of the maps. However, since the whole map was on the SD card it never loaded the duplicate maps from the base unit.

It is interesting, to me anyway, that it appears to have loaded the SD card maps first and then ignored the duplicate maps on the base unit. Not sure about Garmins logic here but I think it might make loading maps easier. Put the smallest part you can on the unit just so it recognizes the update. Now you don't have to pick the leftover maps for the SD card. Just place the whole map on the SD. The GPS will only use the SD card.

I'll put the full map on my zumo 665 in a little bit to see if it only reports 1 line, or source, of maps afterward.

I had the same thought and it would make things easier than figuring out what to put on the card after the unit, as long as the maps don't get larger than the 3.68 GB my 4 GB SD Card offers as space.

I wiped the card clean prior to putting the entire 2020.10 map on the card. It took about 3/4 of the card.

I might wipe the maps off the zumo and start again, SD card 1st. It's not like I'm doing any riding where I'd need the zumo with all the snow and ice lol.

I actually traded in the 2005 Road King that I used the zumo on last fall for the 2019 Ultra Limited. So the zumo is just a spare for anyone of my others GPSs that might have a problem.

It's getting weirder

I wiped all the 2020.10 maps from the zumo 665 and it's SD card, rebooted it to just the basemap.

Setup the SD card for an update in the laptop SD card slot. Did the update, got the full map, 3D and time zone.

Plugged the SD back in the zumo then connected it to the laptop USB to move the files around and rename them.

Then booted the 665 up and checked MapInfo. I have the 2020.10 map checked with 1 line under it that says ALL.

Reconnected it to GE to now put a small map portion on the unit so GE would not say it needs an update and SURPRISE! For the first time ever GE now sees the map is up to date even though it is only installed on the SD card.

I'm confused even though it's a good thing! It probably has to do with the 665 having previously had the 2020.10 map already installed on it.

We'll see what happens on the next map update.

Now it's on to installing a small map portion on the base unit to see if I get 1 line or 2 on the MapInfo.

Sure enough, 1 line

After loading the full map to the SD card first, letting the zumo 665 see it and then loading a small portion to the main unit, MapInfo still only shows 1 line under the 2020.10.

Gotta love the consistency

Gotta love the consistency between one Garmin product and another.

The only difference between my Zumo 450 & 550 is bluetooth and the ability to speak street names with the 550. Yet the two of them almost never update in the same exact way or have the same space used.

Oh well, by the time we figure them out they'll be out of service, they're already discontinued.

definitely stealthy

Updated my nuvi 885 over the weekend and saw that it was updated to 2020.10. Didn't want to mess with the zumo then so will be updating one night after work, if my wife doesn't take it with her when she heads down to see her mom.

Downtown Raleigh NC

I was driving in downtown Raleigh NC, and the 2020.10 map told me to turn on a street, but the street sign was a different name. It doesn't even know the correct street names.

Street names.

Streets sometimes have more than one name, and often Garmin will use a name that is not the most commonly used name locally. That may not have been what happened in your case, but I have seen it in the city where I live.

I'm a little late...

I finally got around to installing this last week.
