Garmin Express v6.7.2.0 For PC Is Here

Garmin Express v6.7.2.0 is ready to download.

I was going to hold off on installing BUT...!

I was a 6.7.0 updater and made sure I unchecked the Keep Running in Background and Autolaunch tabs in Settings, and as reported elsewhere, was unable to update to 6.7.1 so stayed at 6.7.0.

Upon reading the OP above, I opened GE and found it had auto-updated to 6.7.2 without my permission being given.

It appears that GE auto-update was built into GE 6.7.0 and was not unselectable in Settings. confused

Can other PC users check their findings and report here? 6.7.0 must have installed some always-running component "feature" for this update to 6.7.2 to have been done even with Keep Running unchecked.

Is Autoupdate also built in and not unselectable in 6.7.2?

___

PS: The Garmin Forum hasn't posted the 6.7.2 PC Release Notes yet.

Same here

Just opened up GE and found I'm updated to v.6.7.2.0 and it did it all on it's own.
I also see no option to do a manual download at my choosing.

No Auto-Update for me

CraigW wrote:

I had 6.7.0 installed, and it did not auto-update to 6.7.2.

When I launched it today and checked for updates, it showed 6.7.2 as available. After exiting Settings, there was a window showing "Update Required" with text "A new version of Garmin Express (6.7.2.0) is ready to install. The new version contains critical updates". I clicked on Install Now and the install finished successfully.

NOTE that 6.7.2 sets "Always keep Garmin Express running in the background" (just like 6.7.0 did)

I

I was at 6.5.1.0 and everytime I attempted to update to 6.7.0.X GE reported that 6.6.x.x was the latest version. This morning GE reports that I can update to 6.7.2.0 and did not update on it's own.

Interesting

Given two reports of their PCs not auto-updating to 6.7.2, I checked my 2nd PC with GE 6.7.0 (Keep Running unchecked) and found it had also auto-updated to 6.7.2.

I suggest that some of you with 6.7.0, 6.7.1, or maybe earlier versions installed NOT manually update to 6.7.2 and give it a chance to see if in the next day or two it will auto-update to 6.7.2. There's no harm in this as the vast majority of us will not need to use GE until the next map update comes out.

I might be feeling paranoid now except that Melaq has duplicated my results so I'm not alone... wink

Task manager

In looking at my Windows 10 Task Manager in both of my PCs with GE 6.7.2. and Keep Running unchecked, I see the following Processes:

three Garmin Express (32bit)
one Garmin.Omt.Express.SelfUpdater

All processes are currently are using 0% CPU, 0.2 to 2.1MB of Memory, and 0% Disk and Network.

I'm unsure why I should have any GE processes running, especially three copies of GE itself and the ominous-sounding Garmin.Omt.Express.SelfUpdater which incidentally is the one using the most (2.1MB) Memory.

Task Manager's Startup shows no Garmin presence. Task Manager's Details shows one GarminExpressInstaller.exe Running in Memory, and Task Manager's Services shows nothing Garmin-related Running or Stopped although I may be missing something if its Service name doesn't start with "Garmin."

___

It'd be interesting for those with pre-6.7.0 installed to see what their Task Manager shows and for others with 6.7.2 to confirm my Task Manager results.

No auto update for me.

I was at 6.5.1.0 and when I verified to see if there was an update I was offered the 6.6.x.x version. I chose not to update. It is also still configured to not auto update. This morning GE reports that I can update to 6.7.2.0 . I again chose to not update at this time.

Task Manager - no Garmin Express

With Keep Running unchecked for Express 6.7.2, I see no Garmin processes.

If I start Express and check Keep Running, I see Express.exe and CefSharp.BrowserSubprocess.exe, and the Task Manager's Startup tab shows Garmin Express (Express.exe)

CraigW, if you reboot Windows, are those four processes you reported still running?

This was my experience. I'll add that there was no way to opt out of the update, could not proceed without agreeing to the update.

My guess as to why no auto update, I have my Windows settings to not allow any update without approval, for all programs.

The photo below shows GE opened and telling about the update.

Prior to the update I had, and after, I unchecked the the running in the background option.

More Task Manager results

After a reboot of the PC following my auto-update to 6.7.2 with Keep Running unchecked, Task Manager no longer shows any Garmin-related names. I wonder if not rebooting the PC after 6.7.0 was installed last week with its default Keep Running checked, then unchecked by me, that the uncheck was not implemented until I rebooted. Could that explain why Melaq's and my two PCs autoupdated even with Keep Running unchecked? Melaq, did you do a PC reboot after updating to 6.7.0? For those of you that haven't been auto-updated to 6.7.2, did you reboot after installing 6.7.0 or 6.7.1?

PS: In looking at the install files and folders on my PC for GE, I see two subfolders, one named Express Self Updater (folder dated 4/24/15) and another named Express SelfUpdater (folder dated today, 8/14/18).

I was doing just that as you were posting the above. smile

When I opened GE

When I opened GE, I got a pop-up window stating that there was an update available. Clicked install and all went well.

I usually know when something updates automatically, as the desktop icon is in a new location. Google Earth is an exception, but the style or color of the icon changes after an update to clue me in that something changed.

The update on my 2 Win7 PCs went exactly as you described. Since I don't leave GE running in the background, I got the "update available" popup when I started GE.

Thanks.

Well, it sounds like whether autoupdate occurred or didn't, that a mandatory update to 6.7.2 will have to be done to be able to use GE for map updates.

I still prefer to do updates manually and not have a program or some services running in background for an autoupdate to occur.

Option

Got a popup with option to install or not. I didn't.

No auto update here ...

...just the notification that the update was available. I did update it and everything appears to be just fine and running smoothly.

Release Notes.

We’ve released a hotfix for Garmin Express, v6.7.2. Due to this version needing to be available for all affected users, Express is available to 100% of users that download from http://www.garmin.com/express and Garmin Connect.

Included with this version:

Fixed an issue with the installer. Any new users who had never installed Express before would encounter an error during the installation.

GE

Just like CraigW I too had three 32 bit GE's and one GE OMT self update in Task manager.

I also did a recheck in GE and I think what you may have to disable in "Schedule" and automatically download device updates is to set the "Anytime" to "Never". My guess !

Edit:
Rebooted and now there is NO mention of GE in the Task Manager.

Thanks. My 4/24/15 folder must be a leftover from a much earlier GE that should have been deleted during an update. I think I'll delete the folder.

I had to download the update.

Downloaded and installed

with no issues. This time GE recognized that an update was available and started downloading it right away. Seemed to talk longer than usual to install but in the end it is working fine. Windows 7 based machine.

Here

Release note:

-Fixed an issue with the installer. Any new users who had never installed Express before would encounter an error during the installation.

Maybe reboot is the difference

From the above posts it seems that unchecking the "always keep Garmin Express running in the background" is not enough, maybe a reboot is also required.

But after upgrading to 6.7.2.0 I checked and the two Garmin processes running after the upgrade disappeared after unchecking the box (no reboot). And I could not find any other Garmin processes or services.

So now I'm even more confused!

But I know I have rebooted after the 6.7.0.0 upgrade and my GE did not auto update.

Thanks

I just updated.

Thanks

Updated with no problems

Re: Garmin Express v6.7.2.0 For PC Is Here

Just updated GE from within the program on my Win 7 PC, no problems. Had to uncheck the option to keep it from running in the background. No reboot needed. Thanks for the notice.

So What Improvements, if any, Has Garmin Made to Garmin Express?

I've been blindly updating with every new release. But I'm still left with wondering whether there have been any real improvements to the program?

Here's a summary:

There's a similar thread on the Garmin Forum for Mac's GE.

And ...

As you'll see much of it has nothing to do with automobile devices smile

Garmin

Garmin has made a lot of progress in making GE a stable piece of software for updating the maps on your GPS. Remember those days when we refused to use GE because of all the problems we'd run into. That doesn't happen anymore.

There probably isn't any need to update GE with every new version that appears but GE will probably make you update when a new map is released. Unless there are major changes in any particular update, I normally wait until I'm forced to install a new version in order to update my maps.
