Extra POI Editor

Anybody use Extra POI Editor? I've been using v6.04 for some time and now all of a sudden the software is 'locking up'. Won't open POI's, and can't close it - have to use Task Manager to shut it down.

I've tried uninstall and reinstall with no success. Suggestions appreciated.

v6.04 working OK for me

Haven't used EPE in a while, but just tried it and all is OK for me.

Perhaps there is something messed up in the EPE config file. You might try running it with Extra_POI_Editor.exe -reset which will clear everything back to defaults.

This phenomenon has been around for a while. Try holding the shift key down while you start EPE. That usually circumvents the issue. Strangely enough it usually magically starts working correctly after a while.

Thanks Phil! Using the Shift key worked.

Have not encounted this

Have not encounted this issue, but good to know. OBTW - has there EVER been an update to EPE?

Called up EPE today and Google Maps display in EPE shows in grey and says "For Development Purposes Only"

Our friend sussamb posted this in another forum:

"Regrettably turboccc hasn't been well for a while I understand so there is no further development going on."

Also I suspect any issues with Google Maps are caused by their new pricing policy as outlined here:

Grey maps...

I just noticed the grey maps too, saying for development purposes only. grr.

another question is there a way to save the M-Column CSV Fields Assignment? so that after a rest I don't have to go pack to imputing each file setting all over again. it takes a bit of time to do so many.

tried searching for M-Column back up on the wiki but no luck finding anything.

Gray map problem

As noted Google has apparently changed their polity on how an external program accesses the map data to my understanding. The workaround I found involves the extra steps to obtain the desired coordinates directly from Google Maps and then copy/paste them into the fields in EPE. It's not as easy as it was, but is the only way I have found to continue forward.

I have not experienced the problem described by the OP. Does this happen on a specific version of Windows? I'm still using W7.

Poi errors, in pictures ...

The first two screen shots are when you open POI and get the error and then when you click OK

https://s15.postimg.cc/818ubvv4b/poi_error1.jpg

https://s15.postimg.cc/818uby0a3/poi_error2.jpg

The third screen shot is what you get if you click "Are you the owner?"

https://s15.postimg.cc/jdlftur0b/poi_erro3.jpg

So basically Google wants a slice of the pie.

So ...

With turbo not doing well (if someone knows how to contact him/her please pass on my hope of getting well) is there another (easy) way to do whatever the Poi Editor did to a file to make it workable with the Garmin Poi Loader?

The End Of

...free pies.

Wiah turbo would pass on his software to someone to support.

It would certainly be nice if turbo can pass on his source code for someone to support. It's too good a program to be lost in history.

MapSource and BaseCamp both call Google Maps without the development grey map like EPE. I wonder how they avoid the same thing?

I pretty much only use Extra Poi to convert the red and speed camera files from csv to gpx files which in turn become a gpi file when loaded by the Garmin Poi Loader. I've always done it this way and know of no other way, can someone point me toward a video of another way to do this?

I have, in the distant past, made a Poi file but it was so long ago I don't remember that procedure, and I don't add/change any info when converting the RLC/speed Poi's.

Easy to do if you pay Google the required fee. If Garmin's software requires the API calls that Google now charges a lot more for, I suspect that Garmin is big enough that the additional cost is of little importance. They just pay it and don't have to pay a room full of programmers to update the software to use some other providers maps.

You can still use EPE to convert csv to gpx. It's only the Google map function that will not work.

OK I'll see if I can go past the error messages, which I didn't try earlier.

Also CSV files can be loaded to your GPS using POI Loader. You don't need to convert them to Gpx.

Google Map Function

Google Map Function still works for me. It's a pain in the butt because of the watermark and the gray overlay but it will still search and find addresses, and you can 'grab' the GPS coordinates.

I

I been using Tyre for Travel and it's now the same. The map still works but there are now watermarks and overlays on the map screen and it makes it a pain to use.

Last time I tried (not long ago), it worked. However, the maps didn't.

OK

However

beagle.fan wrote:

I get the message:

Google
This page can't load Google Maps correctly

OK

When I press "OK", I get a map that is "greyed out" but nevertheless works.

In POI Edit, I can move the "marker" and press "Grab" in order to get new coordinates.

Not the best, but it gets me what I want.

And that's what I found also. Not the best but works.

Same here

Just having received my new 50 LMT-HD yesterday, I was busy setting up all my routes, way-points etc including downloading the new RLC and Speed Cam files.

To install those I used EPE to set up distance warnings and converting to GPX I found the same thing. First it would show you a map and then it disappears and leaves a grey error message.

But installing these new GPX files using POI Loader, all the locations show up correctly including the icons, so whatever error it is reporting does not appear to cause any problems.

An alternative approach

jgermann wrote:

This has been my experience.

I also found that if you go to Google Maps directly, you can drop a point on the map and at the very bottom, coordinates to the pin drop will appear. Copy (I write them down) them over to POI Editor and you have the geotaged location.

A bit more work on your part, but you have no annoying messages and you regain the use of aerial view pictures and Extra POI doesn't show anymore.

Satellite View.

This is what I've started doing. I use satellite view, and then I can drag the marker right to the driveway or the highway ramp, etc.

I goofed on one recently, by accidently including the degree symbol, that Google Earth includes, when I copied and pasted the coordinates. I pretty quickly learned to only copy the number portion of the coordinates.
