Good Price on a NEW Garmin Driveluxe 51 LMT-S

I've been looking at the Garmin Driveluxe series for some time now. Not willing to pay the $349 price, I've been waiting for refurbs to hit the market. It appears I waited too long since refurbs are non existent and even new units are very hard to find.

A call to Garmin confirms the Driveluxe series has been discontinued. They claim it was due to the units high price was no longer competitive in the automotive GPS market.

Micro Center is running a closeout sale on new Drivelux 51's for $210. That is about what I would expect to pay for a refurb.

http://www.microcenter.com/search/search_results.aspx?Ntt=ga...

The catch is, the product is only available in their brick and mortar stores and not online. Micro Center has stores across the country though so if anyone is interested, it's easy to check their stock at any of their locations via the above link.

I was lucky enough to find one at a nearby store.

Glad you were able to get a Driveluxe 51!

Let us know how you like it after you have used it a while. I will be interested to hear your comparison of the DriveLuxe 51 to your 3597's.

I checked the stores nearest me (MN, IL, KS) and they are sold out in all those locations.

3597 Replacement?

I doubt the Driveluxe will replace my beloved 3597's but you never know.

I may be giving away my marketing secrets here but due to it's brief popularity and early demise, the Driveluxe will sell quickly on eBay. I actually bought the entire store stock mainly for resale.

Whether I keep one for my own use remains to be seen.

Ahhhh...

Nothing wrong with a little Entrepreneurship. Hope you make a good profit!

So aside from wifi and

So aside from wifi and incident notification what does one really gain? One does lose HD traffic as the 51 requires smartphone link for traffic now.

Good Price On A NEW Garmin Driveluxe 51 LMT-S

I was at my local Micro Center at the end of 2017. I was not looking for another GPS because I had my Nuvi 3597. I was over by the Garmin display and I found out that they had a clearance Garmin Driveluxe 51 NA LMT-S for $137.96. I bought it, even though I really didn't need it.

It is pretty similar to the 3597 in a number of ways. I do use the Bluetooth feature and see texts as I get them. Not exactly a deal breaker, but it is a difference.

Thanks for the info

Thank you for posting this. I have had good luck with the driveluxe series so sorry to see it discontinued

Interesting.

Interesting.

There is a store within 20 minutes of me that has one. I don't really need a new GPS, but this just might be worth checking out.

Thanks for the tip.

My Take So Far

At this price, I couldn't resist buying all 4 units my local Micro Center had in stock. I haven't decided whether to resell them all or keep one for my own use.

From what I see so far, the big advantage the Driveluxe 51 has over the 3597 is it's WiFi capability. This is definitely helpful for users without a computer to update firmware and maps. The unit must be plugged into AC power however to do these updates so it is not truly "cordless". Since I have several computers, this feature isn't useful to me.

The Driveluxe is one of the few remaining Garmin models with a magnetic mount. I was hoping to be able to swap the Driveluxe with the 3597 without having to change mounts. Unfortunately, it is a different design than the 3597's mag mount.

The Driveluxe has other advantages over the 3597 which some may find useful. The driver alerts feature for curves & road hazards and the enhanced Bluetooth for reading text messages on screen could be handy.

I'll post again if I find any more useful comparisons.

DriveLuxe 51 a good upgrade from 3597

I moved from the 3597 to the DriveLuxe 51 and have been very happy. At first I was unhappy about the lack of terrain overlay on the maps but I haven't missed it too much now. The extra information about curves in the road and animal crossings drives me nuts and I don't see a way to defeat it without removing all alerts. The magnetic mount, bright and clear screen, and sturdy form factor all help make this a quality unit. It also finds things faster and has much more storage space built-in. The 3597 only had a smidgen of room left after installing a complete map. This unit still has lots of room left.

Well...

I think our friend bdhsfz6 bought out the entire stock, so good luck in finding a DriveLuxe 51, even if you have access to a Micro Center. If you find any availability of a DriveLuxe 51 unit anywhere, please post the exact location or online site, as I suspect there are some POI Factory members that would still like to buy one of these scarce devices.

If Garmin proceeds on the path I think they are on with automotive devices, I think the DriveLuxe 51 will become a "collectors item". If you think I am wrong, just go to e-bay and type DriveLuxe 51 LMT-S in the search field. Anything is available on e-bay! Right?

Yes indeed, if I didn't already have two 3597's (the 2nd a cheap used one from eBay) plus some older devices as backups to the backup, I'd be looking for one of these. grin

Uhh ...Must be a DriveSmart or plain Drive model, as there was no DriveLuxe 61. The DriveLuxe is quite unique in several ways compared to the rest of the "Drive" line of products. The powered magnetic mount is probably the most obvious distinction.

I will be curious to see what price bdhsfz6 puts on his DriveLuxe devices when he decides to sell them. I may just have to place a bid! For me, it would just be for the "collectors item" value. I absolutely don't need another GPS! exclaim laugh out loud

Although they are getting harder to find, Micro Center still has 2 in stock at their St Davids, PA store near Philadelphia. The price is up to $219 though.

http://www.microcenter.com/search/search_results.aspx?Ntt=Ga...

Even though this is an "in store only" item, It's been my past experience that some store managers will take orders over the phone and ship to you direct. Anyone interested can try calling them at
(610) 989-8400.

If I had known there was serious interest here at the Factory, I would have held on to the four units I bought at their Paterson, NJ store 2 weeks ago.

I was going to sell them on eBay myself but I had lunch last week with a friend who wholesales items like this to a variety of vendors. He made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I had already decided not to keep one myself so I sold him the lot for $250 each. I may or may not have done better myself but my time is a factor. They may well show up on eBay so keep looking.

I may regret not keeping one and I would have done so if the mag mount was the same as my trusty 3597's. The other features like WiFi, bluetooth text and road hazzard warnings really didn't interest me.

On Ebay

There are two new Driveluxe 51's on eBay now. Both are from overseas vendors and likely won't have US maps.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Garmin-DriveLuxe-51-LMT-S-voice-act...

and

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Garmin-DriveLuxe-51-LMT-D-GPS-SatNa...

It's interesting to note, that after the monetary conversion, both are above new unit prices here in the US.

The good & the Bad

Traffic can be on if you buy a cable for the gps. Incident notification can be a bite sensitive.
There are other good things like collision avoidance, traffic moving & nice one if you drift on a left or right lane there is a warning.

Welcome to the forum!

Maybe bdhsfz6 can get you in touch with his friend who may still have some DriveLuxe devices for sale. You might want to consider opening up the "Personal Contact" feature in your forum profile so members can contact you privately if they have one for sale.

Difference between DriveLuxe 50 vs. 51?

What is the difference between a Garmin DriveLuxe 50 NA LMTHD and the DriveLuxe 51? There seems to be an abundance of the Garmin DriveLuxe 50 NA LMTHD on eBay for $300 plus or minus.

This is the same as the 51 except it doesn't have WiFi. The one I received looks new. I am more than satisfied! My order took more than a week to arrive, but that is a minor objection.

I think the only difference is that the 51 has WiFi and the 50 does not. In my opinion, WiFi is not needed at all. There may be other minor differences that other members can think of.

DriveLuxe 50LMTHD vs DriveLuxe 51LMT-S

Another difference between these two devices that has been pointed out several times in this forum is that the 50 comes with the built-in HD traffic receiver. The 51 has no traffic receiver although you can add a GTM-60 receiver at extra cost if you wish.

Garmin recommends using SmartPhone Link for traffic on the 51. Smartphone Link also works on the 50.
