Altitude Information from Nuvi 680

When I touch the map and save the location to favorites, it also saves the altitude. I am viewing this in both mapsource and easy GPS. How is it getting the altitude info?

you hold in your hands, a Global Positioning System - Receiver. It knows where on earth you are.
For each favorite you have saved, also saved is the lat and long as well as altitude and the name you gave it. This information is displayed in mapsource or any program that will display this info.

If you are asking how is altitude calculated, the satellite knows where you are and how long it takes to receive the transmitted signal. Shorter time if you are on a mountain top, more time if you are at Daytona beach. Therefore higher altitude or closer to sea level. Not all Receivers display altitude.

........Garmin StreetPilot c550 / Nüvi 765...........

GPS ; the basics if you have

GPS ; the basics

if you have 1 point - you can be a fixed distance from it, you have a 3 dimensional sphere - its hollow of course..
Imagine 2 points - at a fixed distance between these two points you generate a circle and you could be anywhere on it that is a set distance between those two points.
imagine 3 points - you basically get two answers that would be the exact same distance from those points
and 4 points - would tell you WHICH of those two points you're at.

Thats GPS in essence. The time delay gives the receiver (your part) where it is. That also can help generate a GPS altitude. Some of them also sense barometric pressure - which gives it another set of data.......

So, the next logical question is,

What will the GPSr display if I drive to Badwater Basin, Death Valley CA?

Nuvi 680

How did you get your Nuvi 680 to work with Easy GPS? Someone wrote on here the Nuvi did not work with Easy GPS............Dave
