nuvi 2589

How do you really really empty memory space on a nuvi 2589, all these back to factory resets are bull, if you have 97% memory after the reset you still have 97%, I would like to start from new is that possible??

Well ...

... most of the space is taken up by the maps etc, a master reset just clears saved places etc which take up very little room. Most of the effect of a master reset is in inaccessible memory that you can't see, not the stuff you can.

You can

remove language, help files not wanted or needed, extra car icons ec. But before removing ANYTHING you should have a complete back-up of the GPS.

So there's no way to actually delete all that or most of that memory and just use an sd card to load all that stuff? Oh and Thanks for your reply!

You can ...

move map files, junction view file, some of the voice recognition files in the ASR folder and a few other files from internal memory to SD card. It requires some tinkering for doing map updates though, and of course there is always the possibility that you could make a mistake and cause some functions to not work properly. ALWAYS make a complete backup of your device and SD card before trying to move stuff around so you can get it back to the original configuration if necessary.

In general I do not recommend moving things from internal memory to SD card unless you are down to less than 100 MB of free space. But I have experimented with it quite a bit on my 3 nuvi's and they all seem to work OK when moving these files to SD.

Add an SD card

I've been doing all of the tricks cited already, and I had to add an SD card to my 2595 for the last map update. I already had a 4GB card for state topo maps, so I used that. My unit still functions well and I'm still happy with it, so I'm glad I can just put some additional, inexpensive memory into it and keep it up to date.

The short answer to your question is, yeah, pretty much the only solution is adding more memory. When you do that the amount of memory you are saving by deleting all of the other things isn't really worth the effort, IMHO.

Deleting Unnecessary Files

Last I checked, deleting unnecessary voice files only adds about 20-25 MB. Deleting the unnecessary text files only adds about 10 MB. Deleting unnecessary help files is well under a meg.

I've never thought that deleting this stuff was worth the effort.

Am I missing something?

Sixeye: No, you are not missing

Sixeye: No, you are not missing anything.

rlujr7: Leave the files there, get an MicroSD card for less than $10 and let the map go to the SD card. Procedures are here for that, or maybe GE will do it for your model on the next update.
