Garmin DriveAssist51 can not load waypoints

Good morning,
I have a new Garmin DriveAssist 51. I could only load the routes on the Nth America Map by saving each one individually and uploading using Send in BaseCamp. So, now we come to the Waypoints. I have 43 of them but using Basecamp send, direct file transfer to Garmin/GPX and Garmin/NewFiles and a UK program GPSUtility I cannot get them to appear in 'Saved' (the new name for favourites).

I can search individually and save but this goes to 'Recent' and the saved ones are in protected memory and I can not do anything with them. Any idea how long they stay in protected memory 'Recent'. What I really want is an answer on how to load my Waypoints into this GPS
Thanks in advance

Really?

Let's deal with BaseCamp first. If you have the data in BaseCamp (trips, waypoints etc) just block select them, right click and select the send to option, then choose your device. Check you now have a temp.gpx file in the GPX folder on your device with the appropriate date/time.

Is that there? If so disconnect your Drive and reboot it. Your waypoints should now be in favourites/saved places and your trips available in the Trip Planner app.

Where, if at all, does this not work?

Garmin DriveAssist51 can not load waypoints

Thanks for your help. Okey dokey , using your info I now have a 40mb file with all the waypoints (confirmed by opening temp.gpx in ExpertGPS and they are all there). They were in the GPX folder in the root of the GPS. Still don't appear when I tap the 'Saved'icon (I assume was the old favourites on my Nuvi).

So I copied the temp.gpx file to Garmin/GPX, Garmin/Newfiles and to NewFiles in the root of the GPS.

Guess what? No waypoints appear in 'Saved'.

Am I looking in the wrong place?

The manual is about as useful as a wet roll of toilet paper.

Thanks in advance

Sorry

Cant really help further as I don't have that device and unless it works differently to every other nuvi/drive if the gpx file is there then your waypoints should appear in Favourites/Saved places. Maybe someone with a 51 can advise further.

If it were me I'd try a master reset to see if that resolves it.

Building routes in BaseCamp

Building routes in BaseCamp can be an exercise in futility because of the way waypoints are handled. I normally build my routes by plotting the start point and then the end point and letting BaseCamp pick its route. I then start adding shaping points (waypoints) to put the route onto the roads I want to use. This is probably the most tedious part as each waypoint has to be checked to be certain it is on both the correct road, but in many instances the correct lane. Once that step is done, I then go back through the route and begin eliminating some of the waypoints that are redundant because a later one maintains the route over the correct roads.

Once the route is built, then you need to open the original route and add the intermediate waypoints in order. The route now has not only the start and end points, but all the necessary points to shape the route to the desired roads.

The next step is counter intuitive but you have duplicate waypoints, one as a set of standalone points, the second contained in the route. Remove the standalone points in BaseCamp leaving only the set within the route. The route with the embedded waypoints is what you highlight and transfer to the GPS. The route will show in the trip planner app and the waypoints are not stored as favorites or saved places. You can access the waypoints only when in the route so you can, if needed, go off a route and restart by selecting the next sequential waypoint in your route.

Selecting the waypoint in the route does not add it to either recent or saved places if I remember correctly.

Well ...

I'm now confused as I thought while the OP mentioned routes his real concern was waypoints. If indeed he's talking about waypoints or viapoints in a route then he'll find the route in the Trip Planner app.

Personally I don't have an issue creating routes in BC to send to my device. I enter start and finish points then let BC calculate. After that if it doesn't do what I want I simply 'rubber band' the route as necessary. Then send it to my device.

I do the same, unless I need

I do the same, unless I need a specific waypoint, such as an interim destination. On a particularly long rout, 3000 or so miles, I'll just make individual routes. In BaseCamp. I find using the Trip Planner tedious if I need several waypoints, as the search process filled with a lot of individual steps with no shortcuts.

Garmin DriveAssist51 can not load waypoints

Good morning everyone,
I'm still not getting anywhere. My routes are fine, they uploaded from BaseCamp without hassle. It is the 42 waypoints that are the problem. I have reset the GPS and tried to restore everything. What annoys me is that I can not see the waypoints on the GPS. So this morning I used Garmin Express to do a backup of the GPS and yes, the computer saved version shows all the waypoints.

Did a restore....routes are there but no saved waypoints BUT the icon has now changed from 'Saved' to 'Favourites'

The only saved waypoint is my Home setting! This was set in Australia
using the Australia Map on the 32gb SD memory card. (I've tried putting the temp.gpx file on the SD card but that makes no difference).

I'm trying to set it up here in Australia for an extended trip to the US in January. My Nuvi 2557 works perfectly, showing all the routes AND the waypoints so do I have a lemon in the new DriveAssist51.

Garmin have not yet replied to my email query.

Thanks

Neville

Well ...

Difficult to know. You may simply be missing a step somewhere.

Express has an option allowing you to transfer favourites from one device to another. Have you tried using that to move the favorites from your nuvi to your Drive?

If that doesn't work then I'd take the Drive back to the retailer and explain why you feel it's faulty.
