Can't get the Green Heart icon not to show.. on Drivesmart 61LMT-S

Tried everything in the menu's.. can't get the huge green heart icon not to show on the map... Any work around... I called Garmin and he worked with me and it didn't help..
Something I'm missing? similar menu compared to the 2797 I have.

Don't

Don't have your model but if it's like other newer models, you should be able to turn them off by going to:

Settings- Map & Vehicle - Map Layers and tapping the box beside "Places Along the Road" to delete the checkmark in the box beside that entry.

WARNING WARNING - THIS TURNS OFF ALL THE ICONS THAT APPEAR ON THE MAP SCREEN (including custom POI icons, if I remember correctly )AND NOT JUST THE UGLY GREEN HEARTS WHICH IS THE ICON FOR FAVORITES.

I always thought

The green hearts were for:

"Saved Places"

Hmmm. What am I missing?

Never argue with a pig. It makes you look foolish and it anoys the hell out of the pig!

Same

Same thing but named differently depending on model.

tried that

I tried Settings- Map & Vehicle - Map Layers and tapping the box beside "Places Along the Road" a few times.. with a reset.. to no avail..and went thru the menu many many times to see if I missed something.

Maybe a glitch ?? I called Garmin and reported it.. hope they change it.

They use to be called "Waypoints" then "Favorites" what's next ha....

What does it look like?

Exactly how big is it? What does it look like? What location is it associated with?

dobs108 smile

sorry ...

I'm away at the moment with no access to my Drive model but there are two menu settings that influence what is displayed. If you can't find the second one and no one else can I'll look when I'm back in a few days time.

found a temp fix

I found that if I touch one and open it to show the info then close it (back to map) they go away and stay away.. only to return if I leave the map and come back.. either to a menu for tool's or back to main screen.. it works but not sure if this is a glitch.
Price dropped to $199 these past few days.. odd..wonder what's up with that..so soon it seems.

Persistent

Yeah I noticed that that too on my Nuvicam and the new 61 LMT-S. It's one of my favorites or saved places. I just ignore it and get used to ignoring it.

Icons

From Garmin support.

Automotive devices that display POI icons on the map
Most automotive devices will only display icons on the map for your saved Favorites or custom Points of Interest (POI) files that you may have installed. To view the custom POI icons, you will need to zoom in the map to 200 feet or closer. The preloaded points of interest (restaurants, hotels, attractions, etc.) will not display icons on the map if they are not also saved favorites.

The device will show the POI icons on the map when it has started moving or is in an active route.

POI icons will NOT display on the map if your map view is set to either North Up or Track Up.

Your device will only display POI icons when you have the Places Along the Road or Up Ahead Places map layer selected and are in an active route.

To select the Places Along the Road or Up Ahead Places map layer:

Touch Settings
Touch Map & Vehicle
Scroll down
Touch Map Layers
Touch to add a checkmark on Places Along the Road or Up Ahead Places if not already selected
Touch Save
The device will now display POI icons on the map.

How to change the icons shown on the Up Ahead map tool
The Up Ahead icons can be changed on your device, allowing you to customize the items shown to best suit your navigational needs.

To customize the Up Ahead map tool:

Touch View Map
Touch the menu button (three horizontal bars) or the wrench icon on some devices
Touch Up Ahead
Touch one of the Up Ahead buttons
Touch the wrench
Touch the item you wish to change
Touch the green plus sign next to the desired option
Select Custom Search to choose a specific Point of Interest (POI) to display
If prompted, select an icon for the Custom Search POI
Touch Save
The Up Ahead tool will now display the customized list.

For information about the other map tools available on your device, see your device's owner's manual.

I have many in an area (customers) so they clutter up the map.

And that is sad because the reputation for Garmin's phone support has always been pretty good ... better than their competitors for sure. Over the years in forum discussions, we have seen many complaints about the email/online support, but generally if you were reasonable and persistent, you could get reliable support by calling Garmin.

I hate to see it, but Garmin's decline seems to be accelerating. Part of it is because they fail to pursue smartphone technology in any kind of meaningful way. It was really a dumb move for them to trash Viago instead of improving and promoting it. But abandoning their reputation for good support on their expensive hardware ... just plain stupid.

Look what they have done in their software forums (and no offense to our friend sussamb who does a great job there), but they have made their so called "user to user" forums completely useless for the customer base of their expensive automotive and handheld products. Shame on you Garmin.

sussamb does a great job on this site. We all appreciate his help, but he is like a Dutch boy with his finger in the dike.

dobs108 razz

Well ...

One thing on the plus side is that (IMHO) POI Factory has become the premier site for support on Garmin automotive devices. Thanks again to jgermann for the FAQ index which allows us to find specific Garmin support info when we need it. Ironically, it now seems that John needs to update his index so Garmin customers can find the Garmin support phone numbers! As sussamb might say if he was part of this discussion .... CRIKEY! laugh out loud

Incidentally ... "finger in the dike" ... good analogy Dobs108 for his role at Garmin.

Garmin Support

Agree that this site has users that have a great knowledge base on Garmin units and more importantly they are willing to share that knowledge.

Strange ...

... Typing Garmin phone number into Google in UK brings up in first place the UK toll free number for Garmin.

The number is still there

The support number is still there on the NA Garmin site. It is just not intuitive how to find it. Here is the scoop.

On the main Garmin page (www.garmin.com), click on Support, then select Support Center. This gives you the Help Starts Here page and asks for a model number. Put in any Garmin model number (I put in 3597). Then you get a prompt to put in Topic Keywords. Put in any nonsense you want. (I put in baked beans). Or don't put in anything at all. Now scroll the page all the way down until you get the blue banner that reads "Contact an Expert". Below that you will see links for Chat, Call and Email. Click on Call and the phone numbers will be displayed.

Not strange at all. It's the same here in Canada but that really isn't the point. If I go to the Garmin website with the intention of finding help with a Garmin product I expect to find a phone number under the Support link or, at worst, under Contact Us. I don't expect to have to go to Google to find that information.

What do you think about the temp fix I use posted here? I've been thru the menu many times so I can't see where I'm missing a setting. I had success in my Dezl and 2797 not that it's apples and apples.
Again my temp fix is to touch and open a heart. Then close it by going back to the map ..if I stay there they don't show and stay gone. Only when I move off the map then come back do they show again. I have to repeat the process to keep the icons off.

Hmmm ...

... I can't find it on my Drive 50 so may be getting confused between it and my 2508 (currently being used by my wife). I'll check that when she get's back tonight!

I've not experienced a mass of green hearts on my Drive 50 though, so something is different, just wonder if it's yet another thing that is locale dependant (mine is set to UK).

confusing as there are so many models out and all are different.

Just so you understand. The green box's with white hearts in them are my favorites which are many in some parts of the city. Nothing else shows as far as icons like gas stations, etc. which I have turned off in the menu. But the hearts persist. Only when I touch and open one then close out do they disapear..only to return when I leave the map screen and come back.. odd.

Green Heart Icons

I have the same issue with my Zumo 595LM and the Drive Smart 61LS.

What works to remove them on the Zumo does not work on the Drive Smart. Was any solution for the Drive Smart ever found?

Sorry if bringing up this

Sorry if bringing up this old thread is frowned upon. However, I just got a DriveSmart 61 NA LMT-S and now my map is full of the green hearts (saved places). It's especially troublesome in the city I live where I have hundreds of saved places.
Was a solution ever found for this issue?
Thanks!

It must vary with the unit.

It must vary with the unit. My driveluxe 50 doesn't even display them unless looking at the map view of the 'saved' list.

That's not the way my DriveLuxe 50 works. In 3D view mode the hearts appear on the map screen as I drive alone.

Just returned from a week long trip to a camp on a west coast island I didn't know very well. I'd saved places at various spots between the ferry terminal and the camp site and created a route/trip to insure I didn't get lost.

It really helped to have those heart icons along the route but once I got familiar with the route those hearts continued to appear even when I had no route entered.

I would agree, at least in 3D map mode, you need to be fairly near the saved place for the heart icon to appear.

After years of using my phone, I'm back to GPS

The subject is probably better for another thread but with regards to the green icons, yes, they're there and it's incredibly annoying. It's like someone putting postage stamps over your map.

It'd be great if I could:
- remove them (I tried the methods above)
- control their size
- maybe control the level they show at (I think you used to be able to do this with POIs and such on either the old StreetPilots or the nüvis).

The 61 LMT-S is, otherwise, a pretty fantastic unit and reminds me of the short comings of the phone-based GPS apps.

I'm really glad to see routing back to StreetPilot level with multiple stops on a route.
