Thanks for the info, will try

Downloaded with no problems

With the way I have GE set up, I had to do the update manually. Unlike other folks here, GE did not do an automatic update.

'Always keep Garmin Express running in the background'

Wasn't one of the complaints about the old version of GE is that it ran continuously in the background?

Do you check the box (disable) 'Always keep Garmin Express running in the background' in your GE settings?

upgrade issue because GE 5.5.0 isn't compatible with Windows XP

GE 5.5.0 isn't compatible with Windows XP. If you are running an older version that is XP compatible, and you open the older version, if automatically "Check for Updates to Express” is enabled, the older product, after about 5 seconds takes you immediately to an update site where you are told about the incompatibility and "nicely" kicked out and offered no further options.

As I said you are taken to the upgrade site after about 5 seconds. If you are really quick, you can get to the setting screen of the older product and uncheck the auto upgrade selection and then proceed with the map update normally.

Try MapUpdater again. It now has the 2018.20 map available.

Until now, I've always used MapUpdater to install new maps to my Nuvi 1450. But because MU was a little late coming out this time, I decided to use Garmin Express to install 2018.20. It was the first time I ever used GE, and I did NOT have to "register" the 1450. I downloaded GE, plugged in the unit, kicked off GE, and downloaded the map. At no time did GE require me to re-register anything.

I have 5 GPS's that have the lifetime updates, in the past after a GE update and then plugging in one of the 5 GPS's GE would "know" it. This time it didn't "know" any of the 5. By registering I mean with GE itself so whenever I plug one it it automatically knows which one it is. It wasn't something I had to do in order to use GE for the update. In other words if I start GE on the computer it will show all 5 of my units even if there is not one is not plugged in at the time.
