MapSource trick

First let me start by saying I do appreciate all the effort people take to create a POI file. Some must take up much of their spare time.
For that I thank you.

I am retired and have the time to drive where ever I want to but I find most of my driving now is the middle of North America to the east coast. So anything further west than say Iowa is not on my agenda. Also Florida,Georgia etc are not on my list.

Now to get to the reason for my post. In the past I have laboriously deleted POI locations within a file which I do not need nor want.

Today, I had MapSource open with a very large POI file. I was deleting locations one at a time.

While I had the map open all of a sudden a bunch of locations all became highlighted totally by accident. I had no idea what I had done. So now I had to try to find out what I did.

Here is what I found.
Have the map open at 500 miles or 300 miles. Use the "Selection Tool" to draw a box around all the locations you want to delete. If only a dozen or so it will be very fast. All the selected locations will be highlighted. Now hit the "Delete" button and all will be gone. If you select several hundred, be patient it will take a while for the "highlighted" locations to appear. Deleting a few file willbe very fast, but again when deleting a large number of files even the delete will take a bit of time. Be patient.

As of now I have no idea if this will also work in BaseCamp.

If this has been covered already, sorry I have never seen it.

Before

Before Microsoft decided to end support for Streets & Trips a few years ago I used to use that program to delete blocks of POIs in much the same way that it is done in BaseCamp or Mapsource. The difference between Melaqueman's approach and how I used S&T is that I live and winter vacation on the West Coast, so I delete every POI located on the east side of the country. laugh out loud

of course

Of course, one could always sort the CSV file by longitude and delete all values above 97 degrees west....

Why delete them?

I leave all the Custom POIs on my Garmin. Why spend the time removing them just to save a few K? Except for the Offbeat Tourist Attractions where I delete each POI that is ***gone***, ***closed***, etc. Why would I want to go to a POI that's not there?

sussamb, I've tried it now

sussamb, I've tried it now using BaseCamp and have to admit it works as well or slightly faster than MapSource. Thx

dave817, you may be right for just one POI, but I load about 140 different POI files into 3 different GPS's.
When you're getting some heavyweights such as Walmart, McDonalds etc it does make a difference.
